This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Don't be a dick at a con.

So that is the much talked-about Burning Wheel?

LOL!!!

I certainly wouldn't call Luke a vanity publisher, he's obviously worked very hard to promote BW, as have a handful of other guys from the Forge. -- The RPG Pundit

There's a treatment for that.

No way, man. "therpgsite" can't do anything, it's just some people who hang out here.

Edit: Did I say "hang out"? Ew.

Luke, BTW:

Bad dawg! I went to the PrO/forge booth in Essen to buy your game, and what did I see? None of your game. Where can I get it? I will not order privately, as I have been scooped twice now by customs.
Is Burning Empires available through FLGS?

And being funny and all aside: Did you really think you deserve better treatment than any other GM? Or was this all long ago, and you were in a bitchy mood and everythings fine now?

It is in the SF Bay Area...I think I've seen it at two or three stores.

Not sure if that helps you.

luke

I don't know what to tell you about customs. You can order from Eero -- I know he's got some. And you can order from the UK -- Leisure Games carries it. I didn't really participate in the Forge/Essen thing. I had other stuff going on when the game needed to be shipped.

And being funny aside, why do you care? Does it really matter what I say on The Internet? Cause it seemed like you just wanted to jump on the bandwagon, think ill of me and talk trash.

Two things: I get invited to a lot of cons. In that case, yes, I expect "special" treatment. And by special, I don't mean being fucked out of a day of my life (which has happened a couple of times). And even when I'm not invited, I go to these cons and work hard. I typically run 12 hours of games straight on Saturday, plus whatever I can on Friday and Sunday. I expect a little consideration for my effort. Because, as I said in my post, small cons and small press go hand in hand. We can work together to help one another and better one another.

Completely off topic, but as we have the game do'er himself here...

I've been reading/hearing about this Burning wheel thing for some time now, and it sounds like it's got some interesting tidbits I'd love to look at for myself.

But I'll be damned if I can figure out how to get ahold of the right part of it. My LGS carries, and has rather faithfully carried the Monster Burner for the last year, near as i can tell. Only... I don't think I need a Monster Burner. I don't want to make monsters. I want to see proper character creation and the RULES that uses all this.

Online I can see there is some sort of bundle pack you can get, or you can get parts of it seperate, but not all of it, apparently. I'm confused.

What exactly do I need to get to grok this game, for good or ill?  More to the point, why is it so confusing for me to figure out what I need to get?
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

Heh.  What's funny about this is that this thread had been dead for a month and a half before Luke's ego revived it.

That which gave it its first life, has given it a second . . .
Bedroom Wall Press - Games that make you feel like a kid again.

Arcana Rising - An Urban Fantasy Roleplaying Game, powered by Hulks and Horrors.
Hulks and Horrors - A Sci-Fi Roleplaying game of Exploration and Dungeon Adventure
Heaven\'s Shadow - A Roleplaying Game of Faith and Assassination

He had no other choice, as this is the only thread talking about him. Now, if R.S.B. joins our happy circle on the other hand... ;)

Yes, its a testament to his psyche alright.

This isn't about how relevant you are to us, Luke; its about how relevant you are to the vast bulk of gamers, even the vast bulk of gamers who go to Cons, who will not only say "Luke who??" when they're told that Luke demands Evian water and a personal masseuse for the favour of guest starring at their con, but that will also go on to say "Burning what??" when told that you supposedly warrant this top-star treatment because of a game you designed that a few people bought.

Then they'll go see Mike Mearls, who's a real star.
As for you, you're not even a has been; you're not even the Danny Bonaduce of RPGs, you're the Jeremy Gelbwaks.

The Monster Burner is a supplement, not actually necessary.  There are two core books, the Burning Wheel Character Burner (the game is sadly prone to making up new terms for commonplace things) and the Burning Wheel Fantasy Roleplaying System, you need both.

And despite my annoyance at the new terminology all over the place, I'm pretty fucking grognardy and I rate it.  It's a good fantasy rpg, well worth checking out.  At the risk of offending Luke, it's like Rolemaster for the 21st Century, not in that it has the slightest similarity in rules (it doesn't) but in the sense that it's a rules crunchy fantasy rpg that takes your DnD cliches and does them right.

I suspect that description may kill Luke, but to me it's a fucking good trad fantasy rpg and the fact the Forge guys like it too is neither here nor there to that.

Finally and FINALLY! A direct personal attack from Mr I So Desperately Want to be Hunter S. Thompson But I Am a Failure! Awesome! My life has meaning now. I am complete.

I revived the thread because I thought it was funny but that I felt you all deserved to be poked for being dicks. What's a matter, I'm not allowed to have good humor about such a thing? You mad because I'm being a good sport about your dickery? Or would you all prefer to squat in sullen silence in this darkened corner of the internet like the man in Andy K's pleasant little anecdote?

And you know what? At least I had the common decency to contribute something positive to the game world before getting on my knees and asking people to jizz on my face. You, sir, have done nothing but wallow in your own vitriolic vanity and bizzare crusades, declare yourself an underwear pervert crusader and fall to your knees screaming, "I'm Rush Thompson O'Reilly, love me, please!"

We love you and read your stuff because you're funny. You're easy to laugh at -- such a parody that nothing more needs to be said. So please keep up the good work. We need a court jester. I for one will continue to actually put my fucking money where my mouth is and jump in the ring and participate in the hobby and industry at large.

And J Arcane, give me a break. The thread that this thread sources had been dead for a fucking year. Now you're trying to bust my balls about being a month and a half late to the party in this internet hick town? Come on. Live a little. Let's have some fun.

So, in order to make a character I need the character burner, but in order to actually play the game I need the BWFRS?   Seems slightly wacky to me, but then I view the DMG as strictly optional to D&D these days...

My real confusion now comes from the method of purchase. I seem to recall seeing that you could get the... er... FRPS bundled with the character burner or you could get just the... um... FRPS? but you couldn't get the other except in the bundle.

I mean? What do I need to tell my FLGS to actually stock so they can move those monster burners they always have.  I'm not going to go into the ordering an stocking process for this place....
