This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Don't be a dick at a con.

Quote from: SettembriniSee Luke didn`t say he wanted to get this and that, which might all be nice and convenient. He said he wanted to be handled differently than regular GMs.
That`s the elephant in the bathroom.
Or the molehill, because presumably people don't specifically ask a 'regular' GM to attend.  With the real elephant being "well I don't like his game so I don't get why someone else would, there can't be more than 12 of them, so there can't be any other reason why he'd be invited to any con other than to just be another GM to fill a slot".
QuoteLuke has an account here, and I´sure he´s reading.
You've seen this account pop up in the login list? What was it again? I don't see abzu or Luke on the members list.  Other than that why exactly are you so certain?

Holy crap, you don't mean I've been sitting at the center of the universe and didn't even realize it? I mean this specific forum that is, because I don't read any of the other ones here.  I'm also going to have to reevaluate my choice of leaving this forum for days at a time, because obviously that would be total madness.

Talk about overinflated sense of importance.

The reason some people get treated like a rock star is that other people like their work.  They can get away with it.  Because people like their work.
If you can go to con x and be treated like a rockstar, or go to con y and not be, well... go to whichever cons you like.
To say that you like being treated like a rockstar, or that you expect to be treated special or whatever it was exactly that Luke said, well, I can see how that might rub some people the wrong way.  Maybe it sounds pretentious or arrogant or whatever. I suppose it's even ok to hold that against someone, if you want to.
But the underlying phenomenon isn't a bad thing.  Or at least it's a natural thing.  It happens in all fields and endeavors to some degree.  Human nature or whatever. We like people who produce things we like.
In anycase, we aren't really talking about real 'rockstar' treatment anyway.  Did someone mention cocaine and groupies? I'm pretty sure that's not happening here.  And if it were, wouldn't that be a testament to greater popularity for rpgs?  And wouldn't that be a good thing?

The thing is if I saw a con advertising that they were getting in a game's developer of a game I was interested from out of town in to run tables I'd be notibly more inclined to shell out money to show up.  I'm not just talking huge name here. Flymice running something on Iridium? Ya, that'd hold some cred with me.  Just to get a decent firsthand sample of what the game is really ment to do is worth it.

Quote from: JimBobOzSomeone was observing to me the other day that TonyLB, seems like all he does on forums these days is to wait for someone to diss the Forgers by quoting them, and then pop up with, "No, I don't think they meant exactly what they said..."

This is actually pretty classic stuff -- it's hardly the realm of one poster.

Appologism is half the theory. And getting to be a victim ("We're hated for our greatness! We're missunderstood!") is half the fun...

I sincerely hope that everyone involved in these dialogs is having a good time. It'd be a real shame, otherwise.

That said: I think there *are* people who wish the dialog was less negative -- who wish that people didn't say mean, hurtful things about theory or theorists. Who wish that the theory, *itself* wasn't predicated on conflict.

If any of them are listening, I'd say this:

You probably can't stop people from posting the "Look what he said" stuff -- the guys who are going to post that aren't likely to listen to request that they stop.

You *might,* however, be able to talk to the appologists, who at least seem to be on your team. You might be able to convince them to stop throwing fuel on the fire... at least you'd find out whether they enjoy the fire or not.

Cheers,
-E.

Of course. We see this over in this thread about paedophilic fantasy worlds, for example. Lots of people do it occasionally.

However, TonyLB seems to do it exclusively nowadays - seems to have found a new hobby for himself lately. It used to be, "post theory stuff in plain English and get some interesting ideas from others." Now it's "Wait till someone quotes someone else saying something stupid or vile, and defend it as harmless."

Hey, guys ... does the whole "Tony sticks up for people we don't think deserve it" discussion have something to do with RPGs?  'cuz if not there's this whole forum for off-topic stuff where you could go complain about me without interrupting anything else.

Quote from: TonyLBHere's what happens at those conventions:  We organize an "Indie Gaming Explosion," with Indie games selling from a central area and running slots of indie games all weekend long.  Three cons ago we ran a single track, double track at peak demand.  That was all we could be confident of filling.  Two cons ago we ran two tracks, four at peak demand.  Last con we ran three tracks, all weekend long, five slots at peak demand, and all but two sessions were filled to capacity.  Frankly, that's a pretty big chunk of RPG we were offering there.  People come to the convention precisely because of those tracks.  We're a selling point for the con, and we've boosted their numbers.
Something like this I can see as a selling point indeed, and I can see the con offering bennies to get/keep something like this going. However I'm not sure that I can see offering it as worthwhile outside of the above situation. (which sounds to me as a great way to show off indie games, or games in general truth be told.)

QuoteI hope you're being funny.  Because a German defending WW2 is usually either funny or kinda scary.
Obviously funny. As I said, it was a World in Flames moment, wherein you, as the Japanese player, are actually "forced" to attack the US, as the US player is taking away your oil an assets in the midst of the chinese campaign by playing certain US-Entry options.

It always struck me as highly political debateable. In that game, you "have to" attack the US as the Japanese (if you care to play for winning, that is).

Except obviously, not enough people like Burning Wheel for its author to be seen as a rock star, because he's not treated that way, and, you know, he's whining about that like a whiny little bitch.

Quote from: Levi Kornelsen...Or, y'know, that when the guy that most percieve as the leader of the Forge talks something usually considered crazy-talk, those people tend to see Forge posters as "guys that follow a crazy-talker".

See, that's not a big leap, if...

1) "Brain damage" really is crazy-talk.

and

2) The Forge is made up of "followers of Ron".

Which are both pretty regularly debated items.

Levi, I don't know what you're trying to say here, but I think I was unclear in my last post. I was just kidding around.  I thought the taco would give that away.  Sorry.
