Title: Does John Snead Have Something to do with the New Traveller?
Post by: RPGPundit on August 24, 2007, 11:44:54 AM
Because if he does, he apparently would be wanting to butcher the setting, based on what he says about it in this thread (http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=350600).

I mean, talk about utterly missing the fucking point.

I hope not.

Eight TLs? That´s basically invalidating all important supplements, screws with the FOUNDATIONS.

Idiot.

Not that I know of, though he may be putting himself forward for such a position with that post. John is great with hard SF. I worked with him on FTL Now, and know he comes up with great ideas, but he shouldn't touch Traveller with a three meter pole. He has no clue what makes Trav work, and sees it as a vehicle for his own ideas on SF.

Thanks for the heads up on that thread.

I posted a partial reply. Basically I said, make your own traveller universe or if you want to reuse 3rd Imperium material define your point of departure in Traveller's history and work you way forward like SJ Games did with their alternative background.

Yeah!
JSTU = Great! Go for it!

JS knows what Trav is REALLY about = pleace place your thumb in your ass and register it with your BIOS.

QuoteSo, how should we change the setting of Traveller to better fit with modern SF tropes, modern technology, and modern tastes in general?

This is the thinking that led to TNE, but even the TNE crew had the good sense not to screw around with the frickin' tech levels.

John Snead is one of my all time favourite designers, his magical systems help sell me a game and he knows his sf.

Can he do hard sf?  Hell yes.

I'd buy a John Snead sf game, whether it was linked to Traveller or not.

All that said, I agree with Unseelie in that thread, call it something else and I'm in, call it Traveller and I think it's a recipe for unhappy gamers as that's not really Traveller in feel anymore.  Traveller is the game of 60s sf, you either love it for that or you don't, update it to modern SF and it's fundamentally a different game.

Possibly a great game, but a different game.

Exactly my position.

The way I see it is that it'd be almost like doing to Traveller what Bruce Baugh did to Gamma World.

FUCK!
I can´t hear the sentiment of Trav being "Sci-fi nostalgia" anymore!
It´s a moronic statement, that is begetting of a serious lack in the understanding of Sci-Fi literature.

Which (hardish)- sf novel from the year 200x can´t I model perfectly with the LBBs?
Which one?
Name one!

If there is any Version of Traveller that is outdated, it´s T:NE, BECAUSE of it Ninetyness in Art and setup. But even T:NE is built around the timeless Traveller core that is never ever going to be invalidated UNLESS we develop FTL Travel for real.
