This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Do you use female goons?

My players have been rather uninterested in looking under dead orcs' chainmail to see what flavor their danglybits are.

Quote from: Omega;812429You apparently never had any sisters...

Nope, but I did have plenty of female cousins, neices, etc and I was grilled pretty damn hard not to hit them either even when they were fucking with me and that wasn't unusual in my experience.

But I don't think having female siblings would make me not feel differently if that scene had Tony Jaa snapping a bunch of women's limbs and breaking their necks with as much brutality as depicted. It would make my very uncomfortable even if they "had it coming" and anyone I've asked about it outside of gamer forums has felt the same way.

QuoteOr as my dad said. "When someone is coming at you with a knife, (or gun) it does not matter who or what they are. Youd better fight back or you are going to die." This after the 3rd time my stepmother went nuts and tried to kill him.

Well, when a friend of mine was being beaten by his at the time time wife the main reason he didn't fight back was how he'd be raised. From what I understand that's not uncommon in female on male domestic abuse. That and the sad fact, the man is often afraid of being the one arrested and prosecuted if they fight back even in self defense (which my friend was actually threatened with when he fought back once). Its something some female abusers capitalize on.

QuoteIf someone is trying to kill your character then etiquette be damned. That is very different from playing a rampaging loony killing and beating up just random civilians.

IME, PCs will usually fight them but many feel uncomfortable about it and the attitude is different. They're more likely to accept surrenders, assume the women are there for a reason aside from randomly attacking them or are important characters. So its a definitely a different experience.

But Rpgs are less visual than movies and television and I guess many players didn't imagine them as vividly as say a novel (where there's general more descriptive text) so I imagine its easier to make mooks faceless sexless shapes, depending on how your imagination works.

Apparently that doesn't matter. If some (near 50 percent give or take) of those orcs aren't female then you're a bad person. Even if if players will never know (or care) or that it would disturb them if they were.

Goons are faceless.

Thus, ipso facto gender-less.

I like the current trend of pretending to talk about games, while really just carrying on off-topic crap that belongs on other sites.

Well done everyone. Have a fucking cookie.

What I could had jump into this lame conversation and gotten myself a ninjabread cookie?  Damn!  Though I do agree with One Horse Town in that this conversation is useless because who in the hell would even bother to put a characteristic of any type into a goon that won't survive three seconds against a player character?  The goon be dead long before you even describe the gender of that goon.

Well, speaking for myself (and I guess most of my players) when I picture a scene I don't imagine any as blanks. They have faces, forms and yes, genders. Even if they use a shorthand character sheet and are there to flesh out the scene. If a PC tries to talk to one of them or somehow interact beyond a gun shot or a sword thrust they're going to react. There's a reason for them to be there and all that.

Being a Mook doesn't necessarily disqualify an NPC from being human or whatever they are. Its a mechanical issue not a rp one. That's just been how I play and its not a moral stance or some kind of "equality" thing but an immersion issue. I like the world to feel "real" for lack of a better word so that's how I play and the GMs I enjoy run their settings.

Male or female?  Do they have names?  How much narrative authority do you give them?

And is the fucking consensual or PATRIARCHY??

OHT, I don't think its a terrible topic - especially in light of WotC's overt stance to be uber-inclusive as part of their 5e marketing.

As OG joked, there is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" social issue at play as well. And I agree with Nexus, many times "goons" (aka, any minor NPC) are not faceless, but exist with some characteristics to increase immersions. One of those key immediately recognizable characteristics is gender....

...because girls have boobies.

Exactly.

Or at least should be.

Seen a simmilar argument leveled once at wargamers and and how they treat their troops.
