A lot of people do. If so, what die is it, and why is it your 'favorite'? Is it a superstitious thing, or a sentimental thing, or both? (or something else, like some utilitarian reason)
favorite dice type? D12. Favorite dice? My pair of dark jade d6s I got in 1983 in Alaska. Close 2nd are my original set from Moldvay's basic I got in 1981
Favourite set are my plasticy, mis-moulded, piss yellow, d10 set.
They're shit. In a shit kind of way. But they were the only d10 set for sale in Scotland in 2011. So I bought them.
I don't have a favourite individual die, but I do have a blank d6. If I'm GM'ing and my players are mucking about, I roll it, to see how much I care about their shit.
Favorite die type? The d10 percentile dice.
Favorite personal dice? My Star Frontiers d10 percentiles.
And a d20 which is half bone colour and half blood colour. The 20 is the top of the bone side and the 1 is the top of the bloody side. Would love to get the rest of the set but so far have not found any online.
Previously a gold transparent d20 with sparkles in it. Got it at a comic book store.
I have a blue d20 that came from the first set of dice my mom bought for me that did not come from a boxed set. Whenever I need a good roll, ol' blue comes through well. Including a combat where the die told probability to fuck off and gave me four 20s in six rolls.
Whichever d20 my players currently claim is cursed is my favorite die.
Favorite die type - d4. It's just so... odd, in comparison to other dice. Something about that quirkiness appeals to me. Also like d8, probably for the same reason.
Favorite dice to use - my black, white, and red Traveller "Imperial Sunburst" d6 (I have 6 of them) that I got from Loren Wiseman when I was writing for GURPS Traveller and the online version of JTAS.
speaking of die i have been thinking lately why do they call them percentile die wouldn't a percentile die be d101 there is such a thing as 0%
In terms of genre, I have a sneaking fondness for d8s, for no reason I can bring to mind. I use a d8 even now, however much I've been playing 3d6 games since 1981, for various bits of linear randomization.
Wish I had my original polydice, but they were lost in a move many years ago.
i dont have a favourite die but thats largely because theres not a lot to choose from my favourite type would have to be the d20 but thats probably because i mostly play d20 systems
however when you are rolling great big handfulls of dice nothing beats a bunch of tiny d6s
I like Fudge dice with the whole zero-centered result thing and minimalist "+","-" notation. It's all very zen. :-)
Other than Fudge dice, I guess I'd got for the humble d6. It is after all the iconic die.
d10 percentile is my favorite dicing mechanic.
Gamescience Precision, its all I use now.
I am also fond of Ubiquity Dice, as I love Hollow Earth Expedition.
Otherwise, I detest dice pools (HEX not withstanding). Especially the Cortex/+ dicing mechanic.
Quote from: tuypo1;819962speaking of die i have been thinking lately why do they call them percentile die wouldn't a percentile die be d101 there is such a thing as 0%
No. Because a percentile dice covers the spread 001 to 100. 001 is sometimes an automatic failure, depending on the game. The whole idea is to roll better than (or sometimes equal to) the failure chance.
If there is a 0% chance of success (or failure) then why would you even need to roll?
you do make a good point about the d100 being largely for roll under systems but my problem is the naming it just bothers me in a completely irrational way
I love the d12 who gets too little use in D&D. I like it because it's cool to look at, rolls very well (unlike a d4 or d8), and represents an excellent range of number (not too much, not too few), if that last comment makes sense.
By the way: what about a game that would make use of 2d6 and 1d12 rolls; where 1d12 rolls would represent an option for great success but also a risk of great failure, while a 2d6 roll would be more like representing a default job done with caution and lack of involvement.
I have a vague suspicion that all of these questions lately, might be asked so in the end you could try to create a game that would appeal to the much largest possible audience.
I this case, one of the questions (if it hasn't been already asked) is the amount and style of art requested in a game book so it would be more pleasant to read...
My favorite die was my D20 that came with the Torg box set. It just looked sweet. Rolled nice. Was the favorite. But it has been lost to the sands of time. Right now my faves would probably be a green was gold pips chessex set of d6s.
Put up a Poll!!!
For me, it's the D20. For me, it's the die that defines RPGing...even though I love rolling D6s.
Though for pirate games, I love the D8...'cuz pieces of eight. Truly something I love about Crimson Cutlass.
Quote from: Omega;819921Favorite die type? The d10 percentile dice.
Favorite personal dice? My Star Frontiers d10 percentiles.
I had a green crystal d6 that I was quite fond of, but it got lost in somebody's dorm room during an intense game of Three Man (the drinking game) when I was a freshman in college.
Currently, my Star Frontiers D10's - one red and one yellow - never let me down. I always read the yellow 1st, and stuff seems to work a lot more often than not.
For an individual die type, the d12 is pretty cool. It has lots of faces and rolls well, yet each face is large enough to give decent-sized numbers. On the other hand, if I'm rolling a handful of dice I don't think anything tops basic d8's with pips instead of numerals.
My favorite set of dice has to be my old soft-plastic OD&D poly set from the 1970's -- the one with yellow d4, orange d6, green d8, blue d12, and white d20. I keep my original set in a plastic box and carry it to game sessions, but I also bought several "sets" of hard-plastic Chessix dice with similar color schemes for actual play.
For one single favorite die, I agree that the TORG one is pretty neat.
I also bought a set of amber colored dice to set on the table unused during my Amber Diceless games. I get a chuckle out of that.

If anyone voted for the d4, I'd have them shot. I would take them outside, and execute them in front of their families.
Quote from: tuypo1;819962speaking of die i have been thinking lately why do they call them percentile die wouldn't a percentile die be d101 there is such a thing as 0%
A post from tuypo1 with
two punctuation characters? Odd.
Because a percent is a hundredth part and there are one hundred possible outcomes? If it bothers you, treat 00 as 0.00 and just keep rolling digits until you have enough precision. Both 0% and 100% (and any exact value) have probability zero, but you should never roll for such probabilities anyway.

Our company only uses d8. They are my favorite as well.
D6's. Can do most anything with it.

Youd step on a d4 caltrop and while you were hopping around screaming theyd escape with a villainous laugh. nyah-haa-haa-haa!
I have a set of brass dice that I love to use when running. A collection of "peacock" dice when playing.
I don't have any superstitions, per se, but I've discovered I really don't like people touching my DM dice. I'm happy to share my others, however.

All of this. When I used to play Earthdawn with my brothers, the way we knew our characters had finally achieved Big Damn Hero status was when we started rolling dX+d12 for general skills and abilities. I've loved that die ever since.
As for a favorite particular di(c)e, I'd probably have to go with my black and yellow set given to me by my DM, on account of they look vaguely bee-like, which was kind of a big thing for my character in her previous campaign.
This despite my tongue-in-cheek superstition that set dice are even more The Enemy than dice in general. Hey, it's a silly elfgames superstition. It's not supposed to make sense. :D

If I'm playing a game that requires rolling more than one die at once, even percentiles, I insist on using a matched set.
This caused a problem in one game, where a player was borrowing dice, and I insisted she took a matched pair; she then pointed out that I was wearing odd socks, so maybe I was being a bit too obsessive about the dice thing.
My original set that my mom drove me all over everywhere to find in the 80's. The kind that has to be periodically colored in with a crayon, and the d20 is numbered 0-9 twice with a + to indicate 11-20. Sadly lost the d8 & d12.
Otherwise, I want the die to be a solid color with easily read numbers. Prefer pips on a d6 to numbers.
Rolling a d20 and hoping for high is the most fun number generator. Percentile roll under also feels good.
Quote from: Old One Eye;820556I want the die to be a solid color with easily read numbers.
As my eyes have weakened, I've retired the hard to read but nice looking dice I own in favor of black numbers on white. And I still manage to misread the 7 on the d12 as a 1 every so often.

You fool! The dice are cruel and capricious creatures, and those that see in their neighbors a reflection of themselves will conspire together to ensure ever greater doom for all your role playing endeavors. Fortunately, they're also kind of stupid; they mistrust and will jealously guard their secrets against those not of their own kind, only grudgingly submitting to the least degree of wary cooperation at times of greatest peril for their captor's character.
That's the speech as I've perfected it thus far, anyway. I have sort of an absurd fascination with dice superstitions. I fully understand it's all bupkis, but, I mean, we're already playing silly imaginary elfgames anyway, why
not throw discretion to the wind and go hog-wild? It's fun!
D20s, as they're just the iconic RPG dice and they look cool.
After that, a percentile set of dice, with one marked with the 10s, so people don't cheat.
Still, there's a lot to be said for the versatility of D6s.

You're wrong! Dice of the same set have been produced together, painted together, sold together... they've seen some shit together, even before I adopted them to give some purpose to their lives. We're
bros. When it all goes down, and it probably will, we've all got each other's backs.
For me it is a d10. I just like the number ten and like the way the die looks. After that it is the d4 or the d8.
I've never been superstitious about dice; but I do have a 'favorite' die. It's a D6 that for some reason has a little skull in place of a 1. I use it to roll probabilities of a random encounter. The little skull comes up, the players run into monsters!
Quote from: RPGPundit;819913Do you have a "favorite" die?
If I'm rolling a d20, I tend to grab for either a red and yellow swirled color die or a black die with red numbers.
Quote from: RPGPundit;819913. . . [W]hy is it your 'favorite'? Is it a superstitious thing, or a sentimental thing, or both?
It's an aesthetic thing. I like how both dice look.
For our
Boot Hill campaign, I'm using only orange and yellow dice, because they match the cover of the box, and I always roll them in mismatched color pairs, frex the yellow tens die with the orange ones die when rolling against a percentage.
At Dave Arneson's funeral there was a big bowl of d20s for people to take. I grabbed one and it's now my "go to" d20.
I don't have a favourite die in the physical sense. The closest I get to this would be my set of made in China d10s which just have an unorthodox shape that allows them to roll better:).
In the sense of type of dice, I like, in order, 2d6 (I prefer to roll 2d6-7 instead of Fate/Fudge dice), 3d6, Xd6, d100, d30 and everything else, but I've long since stopped discriminating against games on the basis of the kind of dice they roll;).
Quote from: Gronan of Simmerya;936674At Dave Arneson's funeral there was a big bowl of d20s for people to take. I grabbed one and it's now my "go to" d20.
Same here; the Missus and I each got one. My all-time favorite ones are the pink and white pair of d20 that I got in my boxed copy of EPT in '75. Still use them, to the horror of 'Serious Collectors'.
Favorite Die Type - D8 with D12 a close second, don't know why, just like 'em.
Colors - Not really a big deal, but they have to be colored so that with the right inking I can see them across the table.
Shape - I like the sharp-edged "Precision" dice. They don't roll all the way across the table (I'm not a fan of die rolling boxes).
Put it all together, favorite dice of all time...
Gamescience Fire Garnet d12's inked with white paint.
I really liked the d20's (light green and beige, ugh..) that came with ElfQuest rpg (Chaosium). Marked 0-9 and then +0 to +9, they were easy to use as either d10 or d20 as need arose. And because of the plus marks, they could be used as 'exploding' d10's as well. Although the only use for the latter I've had was in determining daily wind strengths..
In d6's, I like pips way more than numbers. And preferably black pips on light dice.
I'm sure I have but I always end up forgetting and just grabbing whatever comes out of the bucket first. If I play at a friend's place I don't even bother with physical dice, I have an app that uses physics and 3D models. That works fine too.
I'm a traditionalist. d20.
EXTREMELY close runner-up: d10 (percentage).
This might sound *weird*. I like to buy a new set of dice every time I start a new campaign. But I don't actually use them. I have three sets of standard D&D dice. Each set "seems" to roll a certain way. My red-marbled metallics are angry. They seem to roll *really* streaky and kill my PC's and NPC's alike. My bronze set is for just free-form playing (I seem to use them in sessions where a lot of RP will likely be happening). My oversized golf-ball sized purple-marbled set is for total-combat, no screen, just big dice rolling big-ass numbers and let the fucking chips fall where they may.
My normal set I always use is my sharp-edged brass metal set. They kill for their master. oh yes... oh yesssss
I like d6's the most for dice type, preferably with dots.
However, don't you fuckers know that dice are passe? I no longer use them. These days I'd rather use my feelings and spirit fingers to determine the outcome of an action.
Since my favorite systems have all used 3d6 and I am so used to using them and thinking in terms of them, I like using 3d6, and other amounts of d6. Also it's nice that d6 are cheap and everywhere.
I have some nice d6 that I like, generally in sets with different colors so I can roll several at a time - a series of rolls can be done as a pile of dice if they are color-coded (e.g. to-hit in red, defense in green, damage in black).
Though yes I also have a sentimental favorite d12, the first I got, which looks nice in red. I like the way a d12 looks and feels, and it is like a double-precision d6, and can also be a d2, d3 or d4. I sometimes use d12 to represent more complex odds I have pre-calculated with 3d6 and full rules, to be able to resolve heaps of action with the minimum number of dice.
Percentile dice can be good too, when you want to think of chances as percentages. I like d10 better than d20 for that because they feel slightly better/quicker to me.
The 20 sider that has 0-9 on it twice is pretty brilliant. Esp. when you roll it with a six sider to determine if it gets 10 added to it. (Old school as f**k).
Like Fudge dice.
Like the new 4 siders I got that aren't those damn pyramids but are little boxes with tapered ends -- very cool.
I don't have a favorite specific die that I own. It seems like every 5-10 years I buy new sets of dice and those take the place of older sets. I typically play systems that use d100 or d6 mechanics, so those are the most common in my collection.
I've got a friend who bought a few of the Chessex "Pound-O-Dice (https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=chessex+pound)" bags and sorted through them. He found a number of black and orange ones - that matched the colors of his favorite NHL team - and those became his favorites.

A fan of the Broad Street Bullies, eh?
I still have the d20, d12, and d8 from my very first dice tube. I'm fond of them.

No. I do not have a favorite die. I keep my dice in ziplock bags, and grab what I want without looking. I don't give a shit about sets, or how nice they look. My players think I am nuts. They have certain sets for certain functions or games. I couldn't care less.
I also have a new favorite die-set; some very readable purple transparent dice (with white numbering) that was presented to me as a birthday gift at a local Con by the organizers in appreciation for my contributions to the local and international hobby. Obviously it has a certain sentimental value besides being really nice dice.
My favourite dice are the ones from the old Blue Box D&D that one of my friends gave me when I started playing D&D. They are an ugly powder blue and white streaked colour which you had to use a crayon to fill in the numbers. Still have and use the dice, and still game with my friend all these years later.
Shemek.

What about Guitar Picks?
Quote from: CRKrueger;938278What about Guitar Picks?
Ummm, I buy a bunch of whatever catches my eye, and play with them 'til they're all roached to hell or lost - as picks are want to become over time - then I buy more. Right now I'm working through a dozen pearl white Jerry Garcias. I had to look to see what they were, though I knew the color, so pretty much the same. :D

When I need picks I just buy a few of different gauges, which sit in my guitar case unused because I prefer to use my fingers. Occasionally I might use one for my mandolin.

I've almost always finger picked. Even when I play electric guitar or bass. Finger picking is awesome for bass because it's percussive or at least feels that way. I found it handy when I bought my MIDI Guitar (http://www.yourockguitar.com/yrg-gen2/) since it's pretty sensitive and responds better to a lighter touch. Plus it's nice to have the option of plucking the strings and of course muting them. I do use my fingernails for certain types of strumming. I like the control, and I mostly do stuff in digital so I don't really need the extra noise a pick makes.
That guitar looks awesome, Krimson! :D
So about 6 years ago, the PX had a sale on 'all kids' toys and games'. Hearing 'games' had me looking to see if I could score some of the classics like Clue, Monopoly, etc.- but alas, none of them were 'classics', all of them were the new 'shiny flashy' versions. BUT- they had Bicycle dice there, on sale, for- I kid you not... $1.00 for 10. Since then, I've held on to them as my D6 dice. All my others are from various games, it looks like polyhedral Skittles in a Crown Royal bag.
