Title: DM training for 3rd Edition D&D needed
Post by: JohnnyTurbo on December 19, 2021, 03:46:02 PM
I have been asked by the wife to DM for her group in a few months.  Aside from the DM guide are there and YT channels or sites that anyone knows about to make me a better DM?
Any info would be appreciated.

What are "cultural" expectations of your group? Depending of that there would be different skillset and mentality demanded to run game for them.

They are a pretty average group, no outspoken types luckily.
She bought me "The Temple of Elemental Evil" 3rd ed to help me out.
I'm 3d printing everyone a character and many of the monsters to have a visual game if possible. Also using 36"24 battle mat to help with encounters.

I hope you have a great time running 3rd Edition D&D.  Try to get a good understanding of  D20 +/- Stacking Modifiers.  Advantage / Disadvantage was not present in 3rd Edition.  The Temple of Elemental Evil should be very interesting.

What is it that you need hep mastering?  The rules? Adventure design? Or running a game?

If it is running a game, then there are videos on youtube that show actual play.  You could find something and try to emulate the aspects that you like.

Then I guess it's at least at the beginning up to you which "culture" or "mode of play" you wanna use.
What games were you running so far, and how would you call your style, and purposes?

I'd say 3,5 is this variant of D&D that was first to pick clearly what is somehow called Classic / Powergaming style as it's main schtick. I think it's one most supported by game. But on the other hand, I don't think it's act against any other possible shtick, so it still should work, you just won't use as much from system fortes.
