XP charts for custom older edition classes

During the Swords & Wizardry campaign I ran for the past several years, my players and I decided that we didn't like the weird bumps that are in the regular XP charts. In addition I wanted to some up with a consistent set of charts that I could use in future books for new classes.

To use them with existing classes note the XP required to reach second level and that the chart to use. There are charts for 2nd level at 1,500 xp, 1,750 xp, 2,000 xp, 2,250 xp, 2,500xp, 2,750 xp, and 3,000 xp. The charts also displays the total xp required to go from one level to the next. This also show the method to our madness in creating these.

Hope you find some use for them.

This is very interesting, though to be useful it'd have to tell me which reasons there would be for one class to use the 1500xp chart versus another to use the 3000xp chart...

Step 1: Create your class by keeping a few things in mind: (1) comparison with the other, already existing classes and abilities, (2) the steepness of the class's progression, power level of the starting point and ending point of that progression, and throughout, and (3) what feels right for the class and the game, from an emulation standpoint, and from a particular abilities standpoint, in particular.

Step 2: Once the class makes sense, has been thought out in terms of how it relates to the rest of the game, is playable etc, compare the final result to the existing classes and their particular XP progressions.

Step 3: Pick a particular XP progression that feels appropriate in relation to the other existing classes.

Done.

I basically did what Benoist outlined for the xp charts for the Majestic Wilderlands Classes

Clerics use the 1,500 xp chart
Fighter use the 2,000 xp chart
Magic-users use the 2,500 xp chart.

I judge how the class relates to the original three and go from there. It is largely a judgment call.

For example the Thothian Mages are magic users with an significant added ability so I bumped to the 2,500 xp.

The ritual classes are obviously less potent than the Magic users so they drop to the 2,250 charts.

and so forth and so on for all the classes I created.

My method for this is to tack on modifiers, rather than tinker with the chart itself.  Say, for a elven thief in Classic D&D (off the top of my head), thief progression XP, with -5% each for the elf's infravision and secret door abilities.  So a total of -10% XP earned, which is close enough for government work.  (IIRC, this is pretty close to the method in the Dragon mag 109 "Customized Classes" article.)  

I do the same thing in AD&D:  Wood elves and grey elves (which, as described in the UA, both have all the "high elf" toys, additional bonuses, and no real downsides) get a -5% XP penalty.  Conversely, I give human characters a +10% bonus (seems a more direct way of accomplishing what level limits were attempting, not to mention giving human characters a chance to actually SEE those lofty levels).

Anyway, works well enough at my table.
