This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"In every jest there is a little truth."

I dunno, I guess it just depends on what you go to a forum for. Just to read interesting stuff? Try The Forge, or rpg.net. To optimise your character? Try ENWorld. Just to mouth off and stir shit? Try Animalball. To have interesting conversations? Maybe try here. We have our share of dickheads, but we have a few people who'll try to have a real conversation.

Wherever you go, you're going to have to sort the wheat from the chaff. All that changes is what's wheat and chaff to you, and what sort of wheat and chaff the forum offers. So, the Forge will offer smug "go read this essay" chaff; this place will offer "shitcock!" chaff. rpg.net will offer "fuck I would never have thought of that idea in a million years" wheat, and "we players are being oppressed by our GMs" or "we gamers are oppressed by society" chaff.

The nectar and the poison come in the same cup, but there are many cups. Choose yours.

Quote from: JohnWickCommunication is a two-way process.

I disagree only slightly, communication should be a two way process, but rarely is. It can be a two way process at times, but often isn't.

QuoteThe sender's responsibility is to send as clear a message as possible. The receiver's responsibility is to translate the information with as little prejudice as possible.

Emphasis is mine.

Prejudice here reads, to me, as any judgment made by the listener, including personal experience, interpretation of nonverbal cues, etc...Except isn't that exactly what communication is? Interpreting what the sender is saying and doing?

Am I just reading too much into that? Perhaps you mean to say that the message shouldn't be confused with your own personal hang ups.

QuoteIf either side fails, communication fails.

I agree. And I apologize. As it stands I don't get the joke, I don't understand everything that's going on here-I just don't know any one in the industry, nor do I participate in any of the industry specific boards.

It seems like I missed something here, but I'm not sure what and where. As such I admit I jumped to a conclusion.

Problem is, prejudice, unless totally irrational, is often imparted by a bad previous personal experience with the object of that prejudice. Which, i gather, is the problem some people have had with John's comments in the past. We all bear responsibility for our words and deeds and should pony up when they come back to roost. Simple enough and costs nothing, both in the short and long run to own up to bad behaviour and move on, without trying to ignore it.

To quote some song i can't recall the title of "Sorry, is the hardest worrrddd..."

Yanno, I'd like to see more people on the Internet other than me just admit that "I'm a dick", instead of babbling on and blaming the audience for gettign pissed when he says something shitty.

No "OMG PC!".  No "You're just prejudiced!".  No "You're a pussy!"

Just "Yup, I'm a dick.  You gotta problem with that?"

At least there's honesty in that, as opposed to spineless cowardice.

Quote from: JohnWickCommunication is a two-way process. The sender's responsibility is to send as clear a message as possible. The receiver's responsibility is to translate the information with as little prejudice as possible.

If either side fails, communication fails. In other words, sometimes prejudice rests on the receiver's end, which lifts responsibility of miscommunication from the sender.
One rhetorical technique is that when an attack on your argument can't be sustained, take the argument to abstractions.

The "sender" - you are Sorensen - sent a "message": "Jared's IP has been stolen by others, and he'll have to close down his company." This message was quite clear, but was a lie.

Whether the sender is being clear or not is irrelevant if they're lying. A receiver may have some responsibility for trying to unravel the actual meaning of the message through poor writing or speech, but they cannot be responsible for trying to see through lies.

The purpose of the lie - or "prank" - was to get publicity for Sorensen's new rpg he was publishing for sale. It was a lie to create money profit. That is in spirit, if not in law, fraud - deceit for profit.

I can certainly understand that you'd rather deal with the general abstractions about communication and the responsibility of sender and receiver, than talk about your part in fraud.

Wick and Sorensen are cocksmocks because they have engaged in fraud, and because they often express contempt for gamers. Sorensen especially is famous for it. Still, that wouldn't stop me buying a game of theirs if I thought it was a good one. I'm still waiting for that.

(from the urban dictionary)
cocksmock: A contraception instrument similar to a diaphram in that it prevents sperm from impregnating the female.

Interesting choice of insult. And by "interesting," I mean, "I don't understand."

Anyway, it is pretty obvious you've got a serious problem with me, so you don't mind if I just keep five hundred feet away and ignore your replies, okay?

Thanks.

Can't win, either way. Too bad. Another on the "ignore list."

Er, wow John. Your idea of customer relations seems to be to wade into forum threads where people are discussing you in a bad light bellowing and roaring, briefly returning to sobriety in order to make a few calm and reasonable posts, and then starting to get cranky and irritable again, mumbling Zen koans and saying "I'm a dick" as if that excuses you from the consequences of being a dick.

Nice job.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Now officially leaving. Killing account and leaving.

Have fun, kids!
