This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Defiance - Gamma World TV show?

Just saw the first episode of the new SyFy channel series Defiance. Okay so special effects and makeup aren't state of the art, but damn it's fun. More to the point it's so reminds me of Gamma World, with the mix of post-apocalyptic aesthetics, super-science and mix of strange races and monsters. It is certainly prime roleplaying fodder.

Of that comes from the fact that the series is tied in with a computer game; a horrifying concept to the purist but you can see why it might appeal to gamers.
New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system
Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands, a post-apocalyptic western game based on Fate. It\'s simple, it\'s free and it\'s in colour!

It is pretty good. I don't mind the costumes and special effects not being Farscape level(that's a large part of why the series was so expensive and had to be cancelled in spite of still being relatively popular at the time). They are good enough, and what they don't spend on that can be used to, y'know, keep the series from being cancelled if it proves popular enough, hopefully.

I saw the commercials for the video game. I'm pretty sure you won't need to play the game to follow the story of the show. It's more of an MMO shooter thing than anything else. Looks fun, but not sure how it compares to Planetside 2.

I guess you can only do so many monster movies with dime-store-effects,  z-grade actors, and laughably stupid scripts.  They've been doing that 24/7 for what 5 fucking years now?

They never stopped. At the moment they have Defiance, Lost Girl, Being Human(since they went a different direction than the UK version after a few episodes, I think it's quite worth it), Warehouse 13, Continuum, are the US premiere spot for new episodes of Merlin, and Haven is still going(and is actually really good; I just wish they did more than 13 episodes per season).

I mean, yeah, some of their highest profile shows ended, and they went through a period there where they weren't doing nearly as much good stuff and took those stupid Z-movies(not even hilariously bad in the B movie sense) to all new heights. But . . . they always had something decent at least, and seem to finally be bouncing back.

Spike

I didn't mind it, but I did think the writing, at least as of the first episode, needs a lot of tightening if they want to make a hit out of it.  I mean, they obviously do, given the amount of work going into background details like language (at least according to their marketing...).

I can take one minor subplot, which appears to exist simply to set up the premise of the future series (yes, that's your spoiler warning, folks):

So the main dude is a wandering wanderer, with his car with no name (actualy: Given the hype isn't his car supposed to be special? That wasn't the car they've been hyping, seems sort of... awkward... to bring in a special supercar after the first episode...), and his adopted daughter alien. Whatever. Rolls into St Louis/Defiance, apparently at random DESPITE being one of the "Defiant Few' the god damn place is FUCKIGN NAMED FOR!!!! (sorry...)

And about half an hour in, the sheriff is killed almost entirely at random during a bar fight. And then, at the end of the episode after some weak drama-llama moments, he comes back to town to save it from certain distruction... and is made sheriff.

See: That's sort of weak writing. Brining in an outside character, a stranger, allows us to get introduced to everything that's new and strange, with plenty of exposition because the stranger is a proxy audience member. Only, in this case we're given everything we need to know about Defiance entirely seperately from this, and the Main Dude pretty much knows everything he needs to know already.   A stronger start would just have him BE the sheriff of Defiance already, saving us a lot of wasted effort moving peices around (and random murders in bars that aren't otherwise plot relevant as far as I could see... I suspect the 'traitor' was supposed to do it, but why?) to get him to that point.

It would take roughly the same amount of time, maybe less, to explain the 'alien daughter/side kick' thing, so thats a wash, and you wouldn't waste time building up a character that's gonna disappear less than halfway through the episode anyway. I mean, they already had a murder for him to solve, and they pretty much forgot the sheriff after that. They could have used that time, say, to show the Spirit Riders (who were a lot more plot relevant) more, both before and after they played US Cavalry.

I could go on with weak writing, but I won't.  I'm pretty happy with most of the acting and some of teh characterizations, and they did put a lot of effort into world building... effort that could have been replicated in demonstrating it, so I'm going to give it a few episodes to sink or swim.

I mean: If it weren't for Claudia Black I wouldn't have made episode 2 of Farscape and I fucking loved that show (I never DID warm up to Ben Browder... not until I saw him on Stargate later.  Seriously, I always hated Crighton)

That's a pretty good candidate too.  Although I don't know if there's a mutation that causes your body to be composed of bubblegum.

I remain hopeful they will someday banish the horror of Wrestling, John Edwards, and Paranormal Shlock from living memory.

Ghost Whistler

I might torrent the show, buyt the script used in the game was awful.

And the game itself is bland.

It won't last.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

I'm afraid there's still an awful lot of paranormal shlock on that channel.

I'd have to see the show to judge.

However, for this thread to stay on this forum, it needs to somehow be about RPGs, and not the show itself.  If all the conversation here ends up being about the show, then its going to be moved.

Spike

Its a bit hard, given that we have all of one episode to go by, but I'll give it a shot. (Caveat: The online game apparently does expand the setting... a little bit...)

Setting wise we have a post apocalyptic earth that is settling into a new 'wild west' sort of civilization already.  By default we have a good, relatively safe city as a setting.

THis particular apocalypse is somewhat unique; A failed terraforming attempt by very humanlike alien invaders (the seven races of... um... something), resulting in a world not truly earthlike, and not truly alien but a mad libs version of the same (so...Gamma world?). We see mouse-wolf-spiders in the opening episode, big pack hunter critters, and the website for the game suggests 'mutants' along with some sort of killer alien bugs and killer robots.

Races:

Well, we have eight main races to go on. Human, of course, then the human-like pale dudes, who may have been the caste-leaders of the invasion, a wookie-analog with less hair, a cyborg-lizard albino race that does a lot of science and medical stuff, an mini-hairless wookie servant caste and the Ihataie? the nose-brow people, who apparently were a sort of violent underclass that broke off and went tribal (spirit riders) after the Pale Wars.  We don't have much information to go on, yet, as to how the alien culture worked.

Also: The Volg, which apparently are part of the seven races, but aren't. So when Julie Benz talks about peace between teh eight races (Seven plus humanity) the Volg aren't actually counted (So? Seven races? Eight alien species? Its unclear...).  The Volg are basically space orcs, possibly genetically engineered killing machines that lack true volition based on the idea that a volg invasion has to have been sent by Someone Else, since the Volg wouldn't have done that on their own.  Note too that the Volg apparently use an alloy in their weapons that none of the other races do, enabling their gear to be readily identified.  (plot anvil, much?)

The aliens do use energy weapons in their technology, from energy switchblades to 'cold fire' guns, but their other tech requires the albino lizards to interface properly to use.

There is an Earth Federation somewhere that pays good money for alien tech, has a strong industrial base, and they use it for leverage to get other communities under their control.

Artifact hunting is a major industry, as ships falling from orbit become resources (Arkfall, Arkhunters, both from teh game and the show...)

I could see pulling this off with somethign deadland-y, maybe starting with the green book classic Deadlands post-apoc. Doubly so, since the game at least implies that alien artifacts can be implanted to allow for SFX powers.
