This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

It's a PA game coming soon from Goblinoid Games (the same guys who gave you LL).  I think it was discussed a bit upthread...but imagine if Gamma World 1st edition came out based on LL instead of AD&D....I think that sums it up from what I know about it.  Come over to the LL forums and find out a bit more.

OK folks, here is my entry into the big bad world of Lulu publishing!  :)

I'll work on the storefront and all that later.

I sort of was curious how long it would be before you did something like that.:D

Good to see and good luck.

Note:  I just posed an e-version for free download.  The other one didn't include the cover and map, the new one does.

Any comments or questions are welcomed.

Any mistakes I should fix that you notice will also be appreciated.  (I was already informed I spelled "Copyright" wrong on the first page...what would a RPG product be without a typo on the firs page?

BASHMAN

I think that Labyrinth Lord has a couple advantages over BFRPG, and that BFRPG has its own advantages.

LL has Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling as character classes in their original forms, just as they were in BX.  It is a true BX emulator; whereas BFRPG has 4 classes and 4 races that you combine like in AD&D [except w/o the Advanced parts like paladins, bards, half-orcs, gnomes, etc].  BF is more like stripped down AD&D than it is BXD&D.

BFRPG however has something going for it in that it has AC count up and and no THAC0 chart thing, but uses AB (attack bonus).  This makes it more intuitive and takes advantage of recent development.  AC counting down makes no sense other than for nostalgia, as it is just adding an additional mathematical step to figuring an attack roll.  However, LL doing this THACO system makes it so you CAN use your RC D&D as is, without converting [simply take 19-listed AC to convert it].

Something that disappointed me in both of them is the use of the original 5 saving throws counting down, when frankly, simply making them be stat checks would have been simpler I think.  Perhaps BFRPG didn't want to step on C&C's toes.

In any case, I am seriously considering Basic Action Games making something for Labyrinth Lords.  I love basic old-school, and OSRIC is only for advanced old-school [which I found convoluted].  So that is one company that will be supporting LL in the future!

That would be awsome!  Over on the LL forums there has been talk about what the game needs to make that leap into the "public eye" and to make people understand that this game is about making stuff that is both compatable with thier favorite old OOP game and offering the same expereience we had to a new generation.

Something that would definately be a boon is if companies that had already established thier "foot in the door" started making products for the game.

Well, I went ahead and made one.  It is just a 1-page module [a 17 room labyrinth] for sale at Rpgnow.com.  I think it will launch tomorrow.

You should be talking to the folks that contribute freelance to Paizo and WotC.  Even if you're not getting the company support, you could get the talent to contribute products.  I'm thinking of bouncing the idea off a friend who is.

I for one really like LL, and will be running it exclusively for a while here.

Quote from: Goblinoid Games;142924Someone back a page or so said that Labyrinth Lord is ugly, and it will turn people off. Well, I've had no complaints about the interior, but there have been enough complaints now about the cover that I think I can confidently say that I missed my mark of "old-school" crusty and managed to reach an entirely different level of crust. ;)

Heh, I'll agree... I didn't really think the purple covers looked entirely professional.  I wanted to support your game though, and the alternate cover was quite nice so I got that instead.  If you ever need a hand with some little things, like layout issues or proofreading (I'm a web designer by trade, so I'm pretty darn handy with the Adobe suite I think) you can look me up.

Quote from: Goblinoid Games;1429245. I have the classic books, but I'm thinking of just playing with Labyrinth Lord, should I?

Answer:That's entirely up to you. Labyrinth Lord was not written to replace the classic books, only to help provide 3rd party support. Having said that, if it is simply easier for you to do that, or you want to keep your "real" books in better shape so you can spill soda on and otherwise abuse the Labyrinth Lord book (no sweat, it's a sadomasochist :D ) then by all means do so. The main goal here is to keep gaming with rules we love, and have fun.

This is exactly the reason I got a copy.  Well, one, because I wanted to support the retro movement in some way (I really like LL and Swords and Wizardry, and I like BFRPG though I don't really agree with every change he made... I was looking for something closer to Basic D&D).

The MAIN reason is this... I wasn't alive in the 70s, and I just started playing the Basic D&D game this year.  I really like it.  I found a copy of the Rules Cyclopedia cheap... but I travel a lot, I'm not really careful with my possessions, and my gaming table always involves beer and corn chips.  There's only so many RCs in the world, but being able to play a game that is in-print (and therefore ultimately indefinitely replaceable at a reasonable cost) is the main benefit.  I have a nice hardcover book with text that's laid out really well, and PDFs if I want to read them on something that glows.  Modules really don't concern me AS much... when I DM I create my own worlds and scenarios mostly.

LL is certainly playable as a standalone game, and it very closely matches the game I fell in love with this summer.  What I would most of all look foreward to is a LL-incarnation of some of the higher-level play concepts presented in the Mentzer D&D sets, for completeness sake, but I know that these weren't a part of B/X for one reason or another.  I'd definitely pick up a supplement detailing the LL versions of the Mass Combat rules and Immortal sets from D&D.

...

...you just HAD to give Clerics a spell at level 1, didn't you?  Couldn't resist going soft just once, eh?  :P

Damn, am I the only one who liked the purple cover better than the alt cover?
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

I like the purple cover and the art work.

hehe, well I think some people here never saw the original purple cover...

...which you can still find pictures of here and there but I'm too embarrassed to point you in the right direction! :o

Heh, I'll agree that the 2nd cover is a marked improvement!  Let me also qualify my last statements in saying I was fully prepared to purchase the game even if the alternate cover had not been available.  :)  In fact, I thought the alternate cover was supposed to be a limited print run anyway... I was pleasantly surprised to find out you could still get it.
