Title: D&D Tries Domain Rules, to Hilarious Results
Post by: RPGPundit on October 30, 2023, 12:02:47 AM
So #oneDnD ... Or whatever they're going to call the replacement for #dnd5e ... is going to have Domain rules; sort of. Hilarity will ensue!

While I agree that this version of strongholds is very scarce and almost entirely devoid of any reason to actually engage in domain play- along with coming online way too early- I can't be mad at them for at least trying to put something like this into the DMG.  Even something barebones is honestly better than nothing, as long as it doesn't disrupt stuff, which this doesn't seem like it will.

Obviously I'd rather see them do something like ACKS, or at least something like Worlds Without Number if that's too much simulation for them- but out of all their terrible calls recently, this seems like a blunder from another era, harmless, well-intentioned, and based on filling an actual gap in their game.

Except that I think (as I stated in a later Short) that the real reason they're doing this has nothing to do with thinking that domain rules are cool; it's because of the VTT.
They want to be able to sell everyone microtransactions of new add-ons they can make to their bastion in the virtual tabletop.

Hey kids! Wanna build your fantasy castle brick by brick in the virtual D&D verse? Now you can! You can build a 10' section of wall for just $2 and keep adding on as much as you like. Each month we will hold a contest to see who has the most badass castle in the D&D verse! The winner will receive all kinds of free virtual swag!

People who would fall for a scheme like this deserve to be fleeced and definitely don't belong at the table in the first place. Hopefully they'll be reminded of MMORPGs or Terraria and leave for those hobbies instead.

I respect greed over wokeness. So kudos to WotC.

WotC must have some data we don't that tells them THEIR D&D PLAYERS really, really want to sit at home sitting in front of a screen without pants when playing D&D and will be happy to pay for that experience.

Somewhere WotC (or Hasbro) got the idea that MMO-ish D&D AI VTT is the ONE TRUE PATH forward and that's probably a data driven decision because IF it's just some dumb MBA woketards convincing Hasbro's execs THEN it's gonna be a financial bloodbath for the company.

I know Baldurs Gate 3 is played by many (perhaps millions) who would NEVER roll a D20 at a table in a social setting. Perhaps WotC believes they can be converted.

We will see.

Personally, the further WotC goes from the traditional Tabletop RPG hobby, the better for our hobby long term.

Is this not all a part of D&D Beyond/Online? Everything about microtransactions, monetization to the corporate gods etc.?

Partially one of the reasons that I've been happy to have dumped D&D after I first played it. Well, for the most part. I've played it exactly twice since that first time, both times with the group that first introduced me to it because that group is comprised of my old, good friends.

Minecraft is cheaper and better if that's the itch you're itching to scratch.

Hell, you could probably build a VTT in Minecraft and it would be more fun than something WotC made.

If you wanna play actual D&D you don't need anything from WOTC. I am happily running a 1st edition campaign right now and am able to play D&D just fine without WOTC.

Totally. Nobody needs to continue to buy into anything beyond the point at which they were happy doing so.

May "happy space" with D&D was playing it with "my group" back in the day and then not really looking back at it. Terrible game.

On the other hand, I guess I was just exploring how <waves hands> "all of this" integrates with the new only platform and product push.

Yeah, sorry. I know that's vague but I'm no industry insider.
