This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

(D&D) Old-School Style Using A New-School System?

I wouldn't say 1e's rules are incomplete but certainly self-contradictory and incoherent in parts. I don't see how confusing and incoherent rules can be a good thing. Rules that don't define everything and so create room for GMs is one thing, rules that cause confusion is another.

Another old school thing is keeping char gen low level and simple.

Use a standard array or roll 4d6 drop lowest in order.
Battle doesn\'t need a purpose; the battle is its own purpose. You don\'t ask why a plague spreads or a field burns. Don\'t ask why I fight.

There's lots of ways to adjust 5e to make it closer to old-school in style.

Anyways, I don't see the point of doing this, but if you want to do run a new game in an old school way (rather than just play an old-school game), it's certainly possible. Don't believe anyone saying you couldn't.

Thanks. I do prefer Old-School gaming systems for the most part. However, this is a nostalgic experiment of sorts. An attempt to recreate the experiences of my earliest gaming days.

The easiest way is to simply use the Basic rules that are free to download.

You can also change how rests work, like a Short Rest once a day, requiring 8 hours sleep if you want your spells back or some other related activity, and a Long Rest once a week. Personally I'm fine with RAW but if an older group wants it to feel like 1e, then we can play it that way.

Yeah, or just get rid of short rests altogether.

S'mon

Just to remind posters that Sammy wants to run 3e, not 5e.
