Not so unusual.  T1-4 brought you up to roughly that level.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

I'm sure Noble Knight Games and other gamer stores will have a few copies for sale right after GenCon.

XP for treasure.  Made advancement really fast.  Of course, in AD&D a lot of characters never made it out alive to reap the rewards....

;)

And if I were totally RAW, it would be hard to level fast because you only gain one level at a time, and that has to be done with a trainer.  But by the end of T4, the encounters were definitely for a level 8-10 party.

If the Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle offer the same kind of scope and sandbox experience as T1-4 did (or Red Hand of Doom, for that matter) I will be thrilled. If it's an encounter-per-encounter railroad, I won't be so happy. I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. It's going to be a test of what awaits us with Next (which by now I agree is a stupid name, and should be dropped. On internet columns it's alright, as an official product name, it's lame).

I don't know, it fits (wotc) D&D treadmill model. I always speak that word in a tone of a government lady. You know, NEXT!

That'll be Doctor Rincewind then, thank you.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

THANK YOU for using that correctly.

Agreed. The other thing that deeply annoys me about this is the pickup at GenCon only deal. I have a life and cannot make time for GenCon, but I am trying to make time for trying out your stupid new game about pretending to be an elf, WotC. Don't make my doing so any harder than it has to be.
Best,

Were I a betting man, I'd say that the first 1/3 of the module will be railroady to allow you to learn the rules, and then the last 2/3 will be more sandbox.

I was wondering how long it would be before WOTC decided to charge money for playtest material.

How is taking money a bad thing?  Paizo did it when they released their printed PF Beta book at Gencon a year before the official release.  It sold like hotcakes and sold out fast!

I kid, I kid.  I know what you mean.  Stuff like this doesn't "thrill" me, so if it winds up available (LEGALLY) as PDF I'll pick up a copy and print it out if it's particularly compatible with AD&D in any way/shape/fashion.  But, like you, I like me some originally printed dead tree material.

In the nearly 40 years it's existed my copy of the Dungeon Masters Guide has never once required an overnight on the charger! :)

Charging money for print copy isn't a bad thing, they have to in order to avoid losing money.

The question is- will it be available in electronic format free of charge?

If not then it isn't at all like Paizo.

If you know of a reasonably priced home printer that can do a proper binding, I'd love to hear about it.
