This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

D&D 4e -- Will you buy it?

Quote from: jrientsI'm already having this argument with some dudes on Dragonsfoot today, so I'll simply note that I disagree.

I don't normally say it because I know it annoys people and some folk won't shut up about it, it's just it was directly relevant to Set's point.

I think the guys who won't drop the point are a fucking pain.

Koltar

Does it matter?

Why not just play the version of the game that you enjoy playing?

If and when 4th ever comes out - just buy what you find interesting or useful  to your version of the game.

Quote from: SettembriniBalbinus, 3rd is totally in-line with all former editions, maybe the least with 2nd.

I'm glad it worked that way for you, as it did for many others.  Like I say, I don't want to belabour it, for me the differences were too great but for others it was pure improvement while remaining faithful to the concepts all the way.

Settembrini

Ohh, it can be faithful to the concepts and be no iprovement whatsoever. That´s a question of taste.

Anyhow.

Folks are just chatting, it's not an attack against you or WoTC- sure it's a waste of time, but were on the internet- it's all a waste of time. Beyond that, how leagally binding is said pronouncement? Rememebr when Coke said they weren't going to make old style coke any more. that lasted all of three months.

It isn't a question of legally binding, its a question of them not having a project.

Unless you want to believe they're actually going to LIE to their client/fan base directly and end up causing hard feelings, which would be unbelievably monumentally stupid for them to do (especially when they have no reason to do so, no one forced them to answer the question asked, they could have just kept quiet or said something more vague), then what this means is that they don't even have a D&D4 product in the works (except maybe as the vaguest of fiddling around right now sense).

To make a product line, then cancel it abruptly is one thing. But to have no product line and suddenly pull one out of your ass is an utterly different situation. You can't just do that.

There would be no point for them just to get Joe Employee to "whip up some rules" in five weeks and call it D&D4.  When they do it, it will be a MASSIVE project, like 3rd was or bigger.

So yes, anyone talking about D&D4 right now is either gravely misinformed, or intentionally trying to make Wizards look bad.

And another fucking thing: I sure as hell hope that someone can find this thread in THREE TO FIVE YEARS OR MORE WHEN D&D4 ACTUALLY COMES OUT FOR REAL (and not in the fantasies and disturbed minds of D20's haters), to see just how many of you who claim you had "too much of an investment" in 3rd don't actually end up switching to 4th.

I mean shit, that's what people always say, with the old edition "I have too many books, I'm not changing". Then they see the shiny new cover, and they're more hooked than a french whore is to the crack.

I'm betting that of those of you who actually OWN 3rd edition books (obviously not the Swine who are only posting here to attack Wizards), if you aren't dead or not roleplaying anymore in x years, you will end up caving and buying the new edition.

Quote from: RPGPunditWoTC has explicitly publically stated that at the very least until 2009 there is no planned edition change.

Perhaps you missed that?

Nope, but I'm also not so gullible so as to believe everything that I read. Particularly when it comes to companies promising things to consumers. There's a long history of companies (RPG publishers, even) of failing to deliver on promises made to consumers. That said, the question posed here is purely hypothetical and entirely unconnected to my musings about a release date for 4e. Perhaps you missed that?

but I expressly said i wouldn't, why would i lie? i didn't even have to answer the question.
Your judgemental anger and excitability in regards to this issue are just silly.

I didn't buy second- and I was actually playing D&D back then. I bought 3.0 and never played it- not one time. The 4E books would have to be really fucking shiny, and maybe come with a petite, large breasted brunette with an unmanagable oral fixation in order for me to buy them*- and I don't even have any problem with D&D or WoTC for that matter.
You bitch about people trying to predict the future of one company- and then try to predict the future actions of countless individuals.
worse yet, you take it all so fucking seriously.

Note that this thread wasn't started as any kind of "attack" -- the fact is that I just dumped well over $500 into 3.5 in less than a week (hardly the action of a hater) and, if a new edition rolled out tomorrow (or in 2009), I don't think I'd buy it if it rendered that massive stack of books totally obsolete on anything other than a conceptual level. I simply wondered who else had similar thoughts. That's all. Really.

What happened to your policy of open-mindedness? Reading your posts, one would think that any d20 discussion that didn't revolve around discovering new ways to lick Charles Ryan's nutsack is verboten here. The only person doing any attacking (name-calling, etc) is you. You like to preach a philosophy of open-mindedness, but it's starting to become apparent that you haven't changed at all since your ban at The Other Place.

Please put up or shut up, nisarg.

Either this is your personal soapbox or it's a public forum, but it can't be both. If it's the former, consider this my resignation.

Yeah, you say that now, but several years from now, when they aren't making your 3.x books anymore, and the new edition looks all nice and shiny, odds are you will drop $500 on that. How many did you drop on 2nd edition? On 1st?
RPG fans are always saying they're not going to go along with an edition change, and 9/10ths of them do (look at Shadowrun 4th edition for a recent example, of MASSIVE bitching about a new edition, and much sound and fury, but in the end people bought it anyways).

QuoteWhat happened to your policy of open-mindedness?

What? what happened to it?

When the hell did I start preaching a philosophy of open-mindedness?! You must be confusing me for someone else.
I preach a philosophy of free fucking speech, bucko.  That means that you can post what you like here and I won't ban you; and in turn I can post whatever the fuck I like here too.

QuoteEither this is your personal soapbox or it's a public forum, but it can't be both.

Actually, yes, it absolutely can be. So long as I don't censor anyone else or limit their speech, there's no reason this place can't be both a public forum and my personal soapbox.  Its done a pretty fucking good job of being that for the last several months, actually.
