This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

D&D 4e -- Will you buy it?

Quote from: RPGPunditWoTC has explicitly publically stated that at the very least until 2009 there is no planned edition change.

Perhaps you missed that?

let it go man, let it go.
Folks are just chatting, it's not an attack against you or WoTC- sure it's a waste of time, but were on the internet- it's all a waste of time. Beyond that, how leagally binding is said pronouncement? Rememebr when Coke said they weren't going to make old style coke any more. that lasted all of three months.

and no I don't think I'd buy it. I never bought 2ed. I bought 3.0 but never played it, and right now I'm pretty stuck on True20.

No, since I don't care for the default implicit setting D&D includes. I also don't believe in this two book model (it's also why I don't generally go for generic rulesets like savage worlds or gurps). One book will do, thanks.

I've purchased every major edition that's been released since I got into the hobby, and I've gone back and gotten some versions that were out before then.  So, yeah, I'll probably get 4e.  Though probably not the day it comes out.  If I'm in the middle of a 3.5 campaign when it is released, I'll probably wait until that finished to buy any new books.

It would take a major change in the mechanics, structuring, or packaging of the game for me to reconsider.

I´d definitely buy the core books, no matter what they do to/with the system.

It´s fucking D&D, you must know what´s up with it, for better or worse.

I dunno.  I can imagine scenarios where I would considering not adopting the latest edition.  What if going to the Wizards website was absolutely required to build a character?  What if instead of three corebooks they put out a single 1200 page tome?  What if levels, classes, and Vancian magic were all abolished?

None of these are likely, but I wouldn't call them impossible either.

OK, I´ll bite: As long as I don´t have to subscribe to anything, I´ll buy the latest edition of D&D.

Another restraint: The price for the single purchase of the Corebooks must be lower than what I can earn in one week.

So, yes: I was assuming  they basically remain in the PHB, MM, DMG hardcopy kind of business. The moment I have to subscribe to some online shit, I´m away and play 2nd edition AD&D* till the end of times.

How the hell could I possibly know?  4e is just rumour on the wind at this point.  We don't know what, if anything it will have other than killing monsters and taking their stuff.

Not entirely true.

Plenty of roleplayers/gamers out there are playing games other than D&D and are just happy and fine with that.

Many people are still using 2nd ed AD&D or even their original D&D books.

Oh, and my store manager awhile ago said the same thing as Pundit. Both my manager and our chain's owners /upper management believe that there won't be a 4th edition D&D set of rules till sometime in 2009.

Dunno, I don't go on about it but I'm of the school of thought that says that 3e is so far from earlier editions it's basically a different game with common branding.  I hadn't guessed what would be up with that, christ alone knows what 4e will be like.

I'm already having this argument with some dudes on Dragonsfoot today, so I'll simply note that I disagree.

I suddenly got this image of Jesus up in Heaven playing D&D.
His pop says "Hey, son whats that book you're reading?"
JESUS: "Its Dungeons & Dragons , Dad. Some of the recent arrivals were talking about it. "

Imagine new bumper stickers: "What edition D&D would Jesus Play?"
....and what does he think of Green Ronin's TESTAMENT D20 sourcebook?

The more I think about the image ...the more it becomes a twisted Bill & Ted sequel idea...

Balbinus, 3rd is totally in-line with all former editions, maybe the least with 2nd.

You know what I just remembered?

 I didn't even buy D&D 3.0 !!
WOTC gave it to me for free , but thats a long boring story. (Wanna hear it ? Send me a PM or e-mail)

That was the Player's Handbook I got for free.

I have a 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide - got that for 50% off at the store  because  it was damaged and I knew no one else was going to buy it....and I then had a good excuse to have a copy.  (It had 4 or 5 pages missing in the back of the book)

So...4th edition D&D ? IF that ever happens - yeah I might buy a damaged copy or one at half-price books out of curiosity.  I'll probably still be riunning some kind of GURPS  campaign around that time , so I'm not too worried about that.
