This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

D&D 4e -- Will you buy it?

Granted, I don't know exactly when 4e will be released, but I suspect (based on recent license terminations by WotC) that it's closer than many think. When it finally gets here, will you buy it?

Personally, I just invested some $500 in 3.5 products, so I probably won't -- unless the move from 3.5 to 4.0 is of the innocuous nature that the move from 3.0 to 3.5 was rules-wise.

If we end up looking at another changing of rules on the same level as AD&D2 to 3.0, I'll most assuredly not make the switch (it has taken me seven years to get a decent handle on 3.5 and I don't plan to abandon it just yet).

What about you?

Caudex

I might, mainly because I don't own any 3rd ed D&D books. If I did, I'm not sure what my answer would be.

I think if I had an ongoing 3rd ed game, probably not -- it would fail the "will I actually use it?" test.

WoTC has explicitly publically stated that at the very least until 2009 there is no planned edition change.

Perhaps you missed that?

I gotta agree with Pundit on this one. It's hard to comment on a product that's not only sight unseen, but a couple years down the road yet.

It would have to be provably better than what I'm doing now. I waited almost a year (and until I could get the books on sale- $45 for all three from Amazon) before I switched from 3.0 to 3.5. What finally sold me was the improvements made to the level adjustments (I was doing a lot of stuff with 'monster'races' at the time). But the rest of it as wellhad an effect. We also 'backwards reverted' some spells and things so we got the best of both worlds.

That doesn't just go for D&D4e.. that goes for anything. I evaluated Savage Worlds for this exact purpose. It wins in the ease of setup department, but loses in the tactical level. It's just not as interesting tactically as D&D.

I doubt WotC releases D&D4 anytime soon, as long as D&D3.5 corebooks sell well. When D&D3.5 sales start to fall, they will publish D&D4.

As for the question, I don't know, I didn't buy D&D3. :p

Whenever D&D 4 is released, whoever it is released by, I will buy it.  I wont even inquire into the mechanics or production values or anything, I'll just pick it up.

I do.

I believe that there will be at least a year between an announcement and a release, and I do not believe that such an announcement will be made at GenCon 2007. That basically leaves DDXP 2008. Or later. And then a year.

I think such a thing will happen eventually, but as everyone knows.. it will have to be far, far, better than what is already there to have any effect.

No, I won't, unless it is radically improved (according to my views of improved which may differ from yours).

That's true whether it's next week, 2009 or 2020.

flyingmice

Unless it is radically changed, in specific directions which I think would be suicidal for them to take, I wouldn't. Right now my rather small traditional fantasy gaming needs are happily filled with Iron Gauntlets and Forward To Adventure!

Not Initially, as I probably won't play it unless my friends really push me to play D&D again. I will stick to either hack-slash fudge, Iron gauntlets or maybe d6 fantasy if I run a fantasy game in the near future.

Possibly, but I want a proper miniatures rule-set and campaign system in the core game, feats to be dovetailed into skills and classes reduced to skill packages, at the barest minimum or I'll continue to be an over the top D&D hater. (I swear it's not rabies, I've bitten lots of people and nobody's converted, or even died...sigh)
