This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

For some reason, I have an itch to run Dark Conspiracy. I wouldn't touch the system with a 10' pole, but I'm considering using Unisystem (Cinematic or otherwise) instead.

Any opinion on the setting and/or the suitability of Unisystem?

Sounds like a case for Witchcraft, the first incarnation of Unisystem. It's available as a free download.
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.
(Beware. This is a Kickstarter link.)

Yup, I'm very familiar with WitchCraft. Think that would be a better choice that Cinematic Unisystem?

And if so, what do you think would be the best subsystem to use for empathic powers?

aw man - that brings back memories. Dark Conspiracy was the hot ticket in the town where I spend my formative rpg'ing years in the mid-90s, that and Call of Cthulhu.

I still like the style, the bleak and dark atmosphere, the paranoia, the twists on classic monsters and the strange 50s-feel that the cars and countryside for some reason had. And when you're a young teenager that weapon compendium in the back was pure awesome. Heck, we even loved the Elmore-artwork!

And yes, the system sucked.
Running: Call of Cthulhu
Playing: Mainly boardgames

To the OP (& DKChannel): OK, what's wrong with the Dark Conspiracy system? (Just curious, not sentimentally attached to it or anything). I'm not familiar enough with Unisystem to comment on the second part of the question, unfortunately.

I just find it extremely disjointed and needlessly complex. The rules for automatic shotguns alone bring me to tears.

It was GDW's then "house system", as seen is Twilight: 2000 and 2300AD.

IOW, square roots.

:) OK thanks.

I hadn't realized 2300 AD used the House System - actually, I hadn't realized it was a different thing to Traveller 2300.
