Title: Dangerous Journeys sci fi
Post by: Old One Eye on February 21, 2015, 09:16:23 AM
I've heard rumors that the science fiction version of Gygax's Dangerous Journeys does exist somewhere, but my google-fu is weak.  Does anyone know if this is true or where it can be obtained?

There was never a pure SF version of the game, but Gygax used Mythic Masters Magazine, the thing he printed with Frank Mentzer to support the game when GDW was running into trouble, to serialize something called Changeling: Weird Science Fantasy.  (This was a working title since the game didn't yet come out from White Wolf).

I'd have to crack open the books, but from my memories of 20 years ago, the settings was our solar system in the future.  It was designed to support multiple genres in one setting.  I'm only going from some memory here, I'd have to get the books out of a box and review more thoroughly, but going from memory...

* Mars was where most of the classic SF future technology was.
* Venus was more "Basroomian", with terraforming making it a place for jungles and other locations, mutations existed there, etc.
* Machines had taken over Earth and the Moon.  The robots held the moon.  Earth was home to "reservations" of humans, isolated lands that were designed to mimic a historical period and time--for instance, Victorian Era, Medevial Era, Ancient Egypt, etc.  People in the reservations were ignorant of the outside reality and agents kept watch.  (Think of "The Matrix").
* I can't really remember what the other colonies were like.

So basically it was a setting designed to hold all sorts of gaming in one overall system.  Magic existed as well as Psychic powers.  A list of new K/S areas were published as well as Archetypes.

The first 6 MMMs were published before the settlement.   TSR had the text-only versions (this was years before PDFs), and if I remember correctly a few docs were leaked that had some of the remaining outlines released.  But I'm not sure where these could be obtained now.

Sound like it would have been quite interesting.  Shame the legal system killed it.  Thanks for the run down.

Wasn't Gygax also working on another unfinished sci-fi game in his final years? (Using "working on" in a loose sense...)
