This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

D6 System Status?

Can anyone fill me in on the current status of the D6 system?  Can it be used in an OGL capacity?  I have read things about WEG>Purgatory Publishing>Nocturnal Media, but I do not know if the system, logo, etc can be used.

To be clear, I am interested in publishing materials under the D6 system, but I am not sure where to legally start.

D6 games are cool, man.  There are many ways, to skin this RPG cat.  I wish you well, and I hope you can work it out.

The latter day WEG books (Purgatory Publishing days) were re-released under the OGL So you can use material from that. D6 Space, D6 Adventure, D6 Fantasy, D6 Magic, etc.

No idea about a logo

Yes. NB the OGL can specifically prohibit use of claimed Trade Marks even in a nominative capacity ("d any other trademark or registered trademark clearly identified as Product identity by the owner of the Product Identity"). Here is an example of an OGL D6 System game. You could use this as a model.

Here is the PI statement:

PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION: Product Identity: The D6 System; the D6 trademark, the D6 and related logos; and OpenD6 and any derivative trademarks hold designation as Product Identity (PI) and are properties of Purgatory Publishing Inc. The Cinema6 RPG Frame- work, the c6 trademark, the c6 and related logos; d6 Unleashed and any derivative trademarks; and all cover art and trade dress hold designation as Product Identity (PI) and are properties of Wicked North Games L.L.C. d6 Magazine, and content created and all interior artwork and trade dress hold designation as Product Iden- tity (PI) and are properties of their respective creators, as indicated for each piece. Use of this PI is subject to the terms set forth in the D6 System/OpenD6 System Trademark License (D6STL). Open Game Content: All game mechanics and materials not covered under Prod- uct Identity (PI) above.

If you want to ditch the OGL entirely, Mini Six has a CC BY SA 4.0 and a CC BY 4.0 available. It is titled the Mini Six: Bare Knuckle Edition on the website.

When I think of d6 games, this is my favorite version.

Many people try to avoid the OGL these days. WotC shit the bed when they tried screwing people over by altering the OGL. Or, I should say that Hasbro probably forced WotC to do that since they're in financial difficulties.  They laid off a few thousand workers soon afterwards.  They probably were desperate to get cash and thought monetizing the OGL would help.  It backfired, so the OGL was restored, and the layoffs before Christmas went ahead.  That sucks, but toys of woke movies don't sell, and we've seen too much woke shit lately.

D6 rules still use the OGL because the company doesn't exist anymore.  There is nobody to convert it over to a different license like Community Commons 4.

That being said, I think WotC learned their lesson and went back to the way it was.  It probably safe to use the OGL again.  People just don't because their trust is gone forever.
I'm glad for you if you like the top selling game of the genre.  Me, I like the road less travelled, and will be the player asking we try a game you've never heard of.

The short answer is that the WEG D6 system is essentially open source under the OGL1.0a.  The SRD is available here: https://www.opend6.net/srd

QuoteIn August 2009, West End Games released most of the 51000 series of D6 book with attached OGL license officially classifying them and the D6 System as Open under the OGL v1.0. This re-release was in anticipation for a formal launch of the OpenD6 website portal and workstation, meant to aid publishers and players alike in creating, archiving, and searching the wealth of D6 rules and variants.

Terrible idea, overwhelming majority of ttrpg players can't pass Voight-Kampff test.

Now that Gallant Knight Games is releasing D6 2E (West End Games' System) would it not defer to their license of choice?

I read about GKG, that is one of the reasons I was asking.  Does their second edition release of D6 eliminate publishing your own game using the original D6 rules/OGL?

You can email them and ask, I had a question about Carrion Lands and they were prompt in answering.

QuoteAs such, Gallant Knight Games will not exhibit at, or provide support for, conventions which don't have a publicly posted and enforced anti-harassment policy.
...
What do we mean by an anti-harassment policy?
...
A clear definition of harassment.
...
Harassment includes, but is not limited to: Verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination [related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, [your specific concern here].

Your specific concern here? That's a clear definition of harassment?

change enough about it and it doesnt matter, specially the mechanics and lets face it mechanics is really all d6 has. Its failing was a lack of settings and fluff, you had mechanics that could allow for the emulation of about anything rpg wise but these often inflicted analysis paralysis on players, especially those used to d&d...i found that unless the group is not a d&d as first rpg group, that i'd often have to pull from everyones piles of d&d books to make people happy. There is no dungeon/wilderness exploration procedure loop for example in d6 fantasy, by default just using the scenes encounters rounds paradigm instead.

D&D is sort of a curse in this regard; d6 fantasy will give you a seamless game of conan or king arthur or even dragonlance but it cant do what players consider d&d w/o the gm doing a little work, which often means pulling items spells and such from D&D...there is just this expectation that the way D&D did it is the way its supposed to be done that can be hard to overcome, unless you get virgin players who don't yet have such expectations.

D6 is my go to system and can do d&d if you make it, but people entrenched in old school d&d will find it less conducive to the type of sessions they are used to...make no mistake, they will find value in the mechanics and want you to force d&d to emulate the dodge or scale functions...this says more about gamers set in their ways than it does about the system itself.

Have you ever tried Masterbook? That was the evolution of D6 to a new, more comprehensive system.

I love D6, but MB takes things to another level for sure. It didn't get the love it deserved, and came out when TSR and WEG were both suffering declining sales due to everyone embracing CCGs, and Gen X aging out of the hobby (before they came back)

Slipshot762

Nah, I've skimmed it and thus seen the best way to use the 3, fantasy, adventure, and space books that I have, which is to say just the way you would use the masterbook in effect. I can't play any game straight w/o feeling like I'm wearing training wheels around my neck or finger-painting with kindergartners. I gotta customize everything. Even axis & allies, I got houserules and stuff for that, I'm just ornry I guess so it comes naturally. Always tinkering with rules in any game. Just not fit for human consumption and that is exactly what I tell the cannibals.

But more to your point I think, yes, the masterbook, if read first, is a great force multiplier in effect for the usage of most any other D6 derived games. I'd say any rpg really, as it's like that first lego pirate ship you ever try to put together, or reassemble after children have played with it. Puts you in the frankenstein frame of mind, digging up dead game supplements and old comic books to sew together a beast of a ruleset variation for a few games with your unlucky test subjects. Test subjects who don't get to bitch because you bought them pizza.

weirdguy564

Just remember this.  Rules cannot be copyrighted.

If you make a game with six stats using 18D6 split between them, a combat system that's -1D6 for every action past your first, with GM set target numbers for tasks, then nobody can stop you.
