This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

D6 Star Wars, which is best?

I've never played ANY Star Wars games, even though I love the movies.

My brother suggested we pick up the new Edge of Empire game to play sometime. I am leery because
a) these guys were charging to play their betas and
b) Are they seriously trying to sell me a Star Wars game without Jedi? (none in the first book, or so I have heard and who knows when the others will be out).
c) 400+ pages & one of 3 coming books meaning I might be looking at 1200 pages of core rules/setting is not that attractive to me.

Everything I hear is that the old d6 Star Wars games were good. But I now nothing about which versions are better/what changed/what each one does best. Sell me on your favourite version.

It's been a while since I played it, but I believe the big differences were with vehicles and such. (I only had 2E, though I own pretty much every supplement for the game, in any version))

But the core is all the same, and very simple, if hard on people who can't count/add.

You have abilities and skills rated by a number of dice and pips. Like 2D is 2 dice, 4D+2 is 4 dice and 2 pips (2 pips is as high as it goes). And the target number varies on difficulty, topping out at 31, but usually much lower.

But abilities go from 2D to 4D (5D for aliens, like Wookiees are strong, so they can have a 5D strength) and then skills are based on abilities, so they add to them, like a dexterity is used for blaster, so someone might have a 4D Dex, then his blaster starts at 4D and you can add pips/dice to it raising it.

But the D6 books are free, download those and see. That's pretty much based on the last version of d6 SW

The Star Wars Introductory Adventure Game is one of the best starter games ever created and the Star Wars RPG, Revised and Expanded is also great. Both are d6 and can be found on Amazon.com.

If you like, I do have extra copies of both that I am willing to part with. Just PM me.
"Meh."

Silverlion

I rather prefer first edition. Honestly, simple and flavorful.

I might do that if it looks like we decide to go with that option. I think my brother still wants to talk me into Edge of the Empire since his friend likes it.

Thank you.

whichever edition you go with you can supplement it with things from D Space, which is free now.

If you want original trilogy Jedi go with 1e.

If you want prequel Jedi go with 2e.

The Jedi in 2e have a tendency to be overpowered compared to other characters so you have to craft adventures with that in mind.  Everything else is cosmetic. Ran Star Wars WEG for years and I can't recommend it enough.

I have more experience with the 1st edition and consider it superior. I think the second one is just more... finicky. It adds a whole bunch of things that are individually small but add up in complexity, and for every good addition there are several that either fail to improve or downright hinder the game. And in the meantime, the added complexity slowly erodes the quick, action-oriented, flowing feel of Star Wars.
Obvious troll is obvious. RIP, Bill.

Sums it up nicely for me.

Make sure you get the Second Edition, Revised version. The revised version cleaned up a lot of stuff.

d6 Star Wars is the only Star Wars game Ive wanted to play. I know the d20 version was popular, but the complexity it inherited from the 3.x era made me feel like SW was shoe-horned into a system it didn't match.

d6 isn't perfect, sure. But being able to split up dice pools, using force points, and the detrimental effect of classic "going the dark side" make it a great system.

You don't really tell me why 2e is best, I guess splitting die pools & darkside is there..?

I'd probably chose second edition, although it contains a couple of things I really hate (like skill specializations)

2e Revised & Expanded. There was a 2e book (Vader cover). Revised & Expanded has the Millennium Falcon on it.

Here's a list of changes between 2e and Revised and Expanded. Also note this link goes to the Rancor Pit site which has its own forums for Star Wars WEG.

It has been a long time since I made the switch, however between 1 & 2 E&R you have a nice index, revised character templates and errata.

The 1st edition books are a bit easier to find and cheaper than 2 E&R.

I'll echo everyone who said 2e added a bunch of finicky cruft to the game.

Go with 1e, it's the game before gamers got a hold if it :D

1st edition all the way. Dripping with atmosphere and great presentation. It will make you forget the prequels ever happened.
