Just wondering.  I don't hear the game talked about a whole lot.  I sometimes have rules questions or ideas to toss out and I usually post them on other forums, but I like the sense of community here better (although I'm not sure if it's in spite of or because of the diversity of opinions here).  :)

I ran a brief d20M campaign a couple years back for my teenage nephews.  They and their friends played superslick government agents fighting mad scientists and investigating haunted houses and such.  Good fun.

I've played a bit of d20 modern, but not regularly.

IMO, D20M is a better ruleset than D&D.

I've played a fair bit of D20 Modern, and I just love some third party products for it. I don't like it by itself, but it obviously makes a pretty decent foundation for other material.

I really thing Spycraft 2.0 does modern better though, so generally go that route unless I am using something else that relies on D20 Modern.

I own it and have played it for an extended campaign.  I'm not a fan.  It doesn't offend any of my sensibilities it's just that there are better alternatives.  I guess it does everything - blandly.

Also, the base classes really suck.  It's not that they're named after the primary stats, it's that they're terribly ineffective - mechanically - until about 4th level.  At which point the Advanced classes are more appealing anyways.  It's like playing D&D where all the PCs start off using the NPC classes.

Sure, start them off at 4th level and there's not problem... but why not just use Spycraft?

I suppose if the game wasn't about heroics then it's ok, but... again, there are better alternatives such as GURPS or HERO or, heck, just about anything else.

WoTC should really consider giving the game the "Saga Edition" treatment.

Agreed.  For just about anything that Modern covers, either Spycraft or Star Wars does it better.

I totally think the opposite of this. As a matter of fact I think the Modern rules is just D&D with crumby classes, and firearm rules tacted on. As almost an after thought.

I think the other fellas got it right. Spy Craft or another modern variant is the way to go.

I'm not fond of the classes or the rules for firearms, and I downright despise "wealth checks."  (What kind of bullshit is that, anyway?)

That said, that's just my impression from reading the game.  I know someone who's enthusiastic about the game, and I'd give it a shot if he ever runs another campaign.

Running for the past 3 months. Love the rules, but not as fond of the basic/advanced class structure than when I began. When you compare D&D/D20M/SWSE, you can see a definite train of thought regarding the rules that I can really appreciate, and where SWSE is concerned a better handling of classes to boot.

Has anyone used the d20 Future book with the d20 Modern core? I'd like to give it a try, 'cause that d20 Future book seems awful cool to me.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

I've played it quite a bit and loved it. Having done quite a bit of gaming with 3.5, the D20 Modern rules just felt right. My group used the D20 future book quite a bit and found it very useful.

I prefer D20 modern over other modern era D20 games like Spycraft and other future games like the Star Wars Revised Core rulebook.

Lately though, I've been moving away from D20 in general and using Savage Worlds more for my generic go-to setting.

I've used it for a number of games over the years.  It's a better ruleset than D&D, as others have said, though I think SWSE is better than both from a mechanics standpoint.  The WOTC supplements are OK (though the Menace Manual is great and would be useful for any modern game).  The third party supplements are what really shine, though.

I liked 1st edition Spycraft, but 2nd, while it had some neat ideas, was too bloated and couldn't seem to make up its mind as to what kind of game it wanted to be.  1st ed was more focused and thus stronger.

The D20 Future books are good.  They've been criticized as too bland, but they're supposed to be somewhat generic so that you can use what's in them as a base for your own needs.

I've played and own all the books. I like it. It was down to d20 Modern or Spycraft 2.0 to run the espionage game we're currently playing.

d20 modern used to be my workhorse game; it was d20, so I could get the 'I only play D&D!' guy to play it, it wasn't D&D so I could get the 'I don't like D&D' people to play it, and it's generic and open enough that I found it easy to kitbash into anything I wanted to do with it.
