This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hygine and sanitation in world-building

Quote from: Dave R;947432Two, speaking of world building, just assuming sanitation controls disease begs the question.  Someone on this or another board had words to the effect of "you can invent modern hygiene and wash your hands all you want, but in a fantasy world if your four humors get out of balance you're still getting sick."  That's my approach when I run D&D, that the four humors paradigm isn't total b.s, that bleeding patients actually works if the physician makes their roll, that the doctrine of signatures is in effect for healing herbs and other ingredients, and so on.

This is a very interesting approach that I'm embarrassed to type I hadn't thought of.  Thank you for sharing it.  :)

Yeah, I don't make it a hard and  fast rule, but just make it clear to any Player in Dark Albion who wants to be a doctor-type that they're not really allowed to 'think up' innovations from later centuries.

Quote from: soltakss;944775I'll include it where it is important but ignore it when it isn't.

So, people are assumed to have chamberpots or similar and to get rid of the waste somehow. Assume they chuck it into a hole and fill in when necessary.

Latrines are only important as ways in, things to hide in/behind or as ways to assassinate local rulers. Garde-Robes provide an unpleasant way of sneaking into a castle.

Don't forget that most latrines were communal in nature, everyone just sat around chatting to each other in plain site, doing their business. Some good opportunities for roleplaying, I suppose, if that's your thing.

Along with taverns, whorehouses, bazaars, and royal/noble courts, public shitters have always been sources for information in my campaigns, ever since the Latrine-O-Gram in MASH. No, I don't have anyone roleplay dropping a Cleveland Steamer. The player(s) announce they're hitting the shitter or visiting the cathouse and I roll some dice.
Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can\'t understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We\'re not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck\'s sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron\'s review of The Phantom Menace

I never imagined my most successful theRPGsite thread to date would be about pooping in RPGs.

*Pats thread on the head*

I'm so proud of you, thread.
