This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

4. Dragonquest (SPI)
5. Runequest 2/3e
6. Harnmaster
7. Rules Cyclopedia
8. GURPS

Have I played all of these? No. but I've restricted the above list to those games that I think I have a pretty good handle on how they work, either because the rules are very straightforward for me or because I've played at least some.

Honorable Mention: Burning Wheel, Universe (SPI), Jovian Chronicles, and since I didn't use my last slots, I'll throw in The Shadow of Yesterday and Everway as well.

I can't in good conscience include these in the main list because I don't understand their systems as well as I feel I should, to recommend them. But I've still got an itch to delve further into them and give them a try.

Quote from: BalbinusThat's a really eclectic list, all quality stuff to be sure but very eclectic
Took the question as my top 10 games I would save from a fire to my bookshelves.  I haven't even played all of them but each system gives me something I admire.  An old school nostalgia mixed with a doe eyed wonderment of how other systems approached the hobby.

10 : Dropping 9 places from 1 its : Cyberpunk 2020 - I spent a huge amount of play time on this game, and was researching and writing a very crunchy autmotive racing/combat sourcebook until recently, but lack of interested players, the derisable CPv3, and finally the antics of the moderators at VFTE finally killed my love for this game.

9 : Rolemaster - Theres something about the endless critical fumble tables I like...

8 : Car Wars - How can you not love the idea of strapping a rocket launcher to your bonnet and nuking the roadhog in front? Technically a board game, I've used the game world and tech to run PBeMs in.

7 : Wushu - I'm a frustrated author at heart, so the Wushu style of play appeals to me although my actual game experience is limited.

6 : Savage Worlds - I rolled up my first character for this inside of 20 minutes, including background - which is about 18 minutes faster than any other system I've ever played barring AFF. The only downside is it needs a pack of playing cards, which I've yet to go buy.

5 : Advanced Fighting Fantasy - Great, nostalgic fun.

4 : Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes : A Mike Stackpole penned T&T spinoff that added rules for skills, modern firearms and generally took some of the ridiculous bits from T&T whilst keeping it almost as easy to play.

3: Tunnels and Trolls : My second ever RPG and still great fun.

2 : GURPS 4th Ed : This kind of has to be here as its the only game I'm playing tabletop at the moment.

1 : Up from 2 for a triumphant return to the top is - Dragon Warriors. My first proper RPG and still a favourite of mine. Some dated mechanics but it's easy enough to house rule around them without losing the flavor of the game.
