Title: Cults of Chaos is Out!
Post by: RPGPundit on July 14, 2016, 02:46:56 PM
Cults of Chaos is now available for purchase!

Now, I know it says "Dark Albion", and of course it was written intended to be a supplement for Dark Albion, but frankly, there's been one thing everyone who has reviewed this product (http://swordsandstitchery.blogspot.com.uy/2016/06/review-commentary-on-dark-albionthe.html)  (like in that link, or in this youtube video (http://therpgpundit.blogspot.com/2016/07/cults-of-chaos-video-review.html)) has been in agreement with: Cults of Chaos is an excellent all around product that can be used for any kind of fantasy-medieval campaign.  It's one of the most detailed books on fantasy cults around, filled with useful ways to flesh out your evil sects and groups, so that no two are quite alike, and so that the cult's practices, motives, and interested are fleshed-out and deeply detailed!

So obviously, if you bought Dark Albion, you will definitely want to pick up Cults of Chaos.  if you haven't bought Dark Albion, you probably should! But let's say you don't want to; you can still use Cults of Chaos without Dark Albion for ANY OSR product (it is system-neutral) or even for any other fantasy game.

Get it on RPGnow (pdf only, for now) (http://www.rpgnow.com/product/187942/Dark-Albion-Cults-of-Chaos?src=newest_since) or Lulu (the awesome print edition) (http://www.lulu.com/shop/dominique-crouzet-and-rpgpundit/dark-albion-cults-of-chaos/paperback/product-22785856.html).  Check out what early reviews have already said is the best book on fantasy/medieval cults in the  #OSR  and maybe ever!

Purchased!

Can't wait to use this bad boy with ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG (http://grimandperilous.com). Dark Albion works so well with it now, and this adds a totally new dimension to our game!

Cheers,
Daniel

How tied to a system are the DA books? I know they're essentially supplements for some retro-clone style game, but are they stat-heavy enough to make them a hassle to convert to something else?

For the record, I'm considering getting them to use with either AD&D/BFRPG, or Fate Core/Accelerated.

Both Dark Albion and Cults of Chaos are highly 'system neutral'.  There's relatively very little system-specific material (there's lots of random tables and new material, but that could be applied to any system), and where there are references to system material they are quite general to reference to any potential edition of D&D or its OSR derivatives.

You'd have no problem whatsoever running Dark Albion, or using the Cults of Chaos material, with AD&D; and it would be very simple to use the books for BFRPG, or even FATE.

I was looking over my copy of Cthulhu Dark Ages, and it sure would be an interesting fit with Albion and the new book, though Albion is inspired by a later period than Dark Ages (1000 AD). Good to see this Pundit!

Well, just wanted to say that reading that review of Cults of Chaos has inspired me....to buy both it and Dark Albion.
I know in the thread about Ken Hite's, "No setting is as fantastic as earth etc etc", there seemed to be a a lot of people gaming to try and get away from our own world but I feel there's nothing like a history that the players may have heard of before they start playing the game to make it easier to "grasp" the setting.

Could just be me however.....

Anyways, very excited to use Cults in either a pseudo-historical setting or in a purely fantasy one!

Glad to hear it! If you (and anyone who bought it) could be so kind, please post a 'review' (really, just a sentence or two is enough!) on the site where you bought it! That can make a big difference in terms of the product's popularity.

Congrats, Pundit!  I flipped through the long preview on RPGN, and I really like what I see.  If I hadn't gone berserk already on a few purchases this weekend, I'd have already ordered it - it's on my wishlist for now.  I like all the tables I see in the preview, very sandboxy.

I will soon propose POD options (including a bundle) for the book on RPGNow. Both for Cults of Chaos and Dark Albion: the Rose War. Yet I must warn potential customers that I am disappointed by the color cover as printed by Lightning Source (i.e.: the POD company that RPGNow uses): it prints dull colors. Also, I got a problem: first time I ordered a copy of the softcover (of DA:tRW) the cover was well centered, but second time I did it, it came with the cover image misplaced. I will have to ask RPGNow about this. Other than the problem with the covers, Lightning Source prints slightly better (than lulu an amazon) the interior pages.

Necromancing the Stone here... just wanted to chime in and say that a buddy of mine started up a DA game recently, and I've enjoyed it enough that I went ahead and shelled out for the hardcover book, and Cults of Chaos. And then figured I'd go all in and ordered a copy of Fantastic Heroes & Witchery. Books are still on the way (the DA books should be here Friday), but I'm stoked to dig more into the setting. I've enjoyed the hell out of what we've played so far.

...still waiting on more Arrows of Indra material, by the way...

Yea, Cults of Chaos is so much goodness. Er, badness. Very accessible and convenient. The editing's a little looser than I'd like in places, but it's had no material impact on my use and appreciation of the book. Great utility for the Dark Albion and OSR GM.
