This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Crystal dice.

I've seen some of these new crystal dice, the ones shaped like rods, basically, with pointed ends. I don't have any as I have a pretty complete dice set but might get a couple if I see them cheap enough.

Does anyone use them? They look like someone jsut made a change for the same of changing things and don't really offer any advantage per se, but I thought maybe they're less inclined to roll off a table or turn over if someome bumps the table. Is there any particular advantge to them?

I have a set of plastic ones shaped the same way. They roll a bit oddly until you get used to it, but the shapes are fun to look at. As far as I can tell, they roll about as reliably as regular polyhedrons. They do tend to stay a bit more contained than regular dice, especially the 12 and 20 siders.

Do they?  I seem to recall mine rolling around a little further than I liked.  Maybe mine were just a bit miscast or something.  I used 'em for a week or so and put them back in The Big Pile.  Pretty, though.

I didn't care for them in play.  It's hard for me to say why, exactly.  They just seemed wrong :D

I have couple of D12's laying about somewhere that I got from a dice grab bag, they roll ok. They don't really impress me enough to buy an entire set.

i've got a couple of d6s; they're okay

I have found no advantage to them after the d4.  The d4 they make is the best d4, in my opinion.

I don't find them any better or worse than anything else out there.  They are just something different that produces the same results.  Picked up a set a while back just to have them and I use them from time to time.

I'm not familiar with them, but they sound different and as such I fear them.

More seriously, it sounds to me like a gimmick, a change for the sake thereof as Nox says in his first post.

True 'dat.  Easier to roll, easier to read.  If you've got a d4 heavy game (My Life with Master, for instance) then getting yourself a stack of crystal d4s is just a necessity.

I can't imagine using them for d6s, simply because it's so easy to get d6s of any variety ... plus the cubical ones stack better.  Higher than that?  I have no opinion.

I know a few people who use them.  I think they look cool, but other than that I don't see any advantage to them.

Not owning but seeing other use them it seems the d20 rolls a lot and is harder to read.  But I'm seriously considering replacing my d4s with the new ones.

They're not exactly new either. I've had some for, lemme think... three or four years.

Exactly.  In fact, the only reason I own them is because of MLwM...no one likes rolling that many Caltrops.

The Burgundy d4 is a caltrop, however, so it feels even more special...and because I can't find a crystal one!
