This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Cover Art = Adventure !

That's one of my all-time favorite fantasy RPG pics. It made Kostchtchie one of my favorite demon lords.

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

Mostly about magazines but I can't help it. I love this piece by Eric Pommer.

Yeah.

This cover had a impact on all our D&D games for a while. One of my friends made every one of his characters carrying a hammer based on that picture right there.

It got cooler with every new character he made who carried the damned thing.

Okay, this is the kind of cover I'm talking about. Very nice.

And richforest, your first post, welcome aboard :D

Thanks for the warm welcome, David.

Ok, here's another one, and it's a cover picture that we also actually used in play.

Dark flying castle? Check.

Bunch of guys haul-assing to get away from there? Yep.

Dragons pouring out of the place? Yeah...

I remember finding that Art of the Dragonlance Saga book in our local public library. I pulled out the ol' graph paper when I got home and mapped that flying castle on the cover. I still to this day am not entirely clear on what it is "officially" (some kind of tomb??). Anyway, I used it as a HQ for a badass dragon highlord type. Thinking back on it, we used a ton of Dragonlance images and ideas from that art book. But we never actually used any of the official adventures or D&D campaign materials. I know I sketched out dragon jousting rules for Basic D&D after looking through that book right there. Anyway, I did read the novels much later, after we'd already tapped out all the gaming we wanted from that art book. From what I hear, our ignorance at the time spared us some pretty awful railroading in the canon adventures.

I've also used covers esp from old sci/fan mags/books. Here's a link to one such cover that was the springboard to much adventure goodness. There are also many other covers to choose from :

Man, it's been years since I saw some of those covers.

Strange. This picture was the inspiration for an adventure set on Jorune. It was also the first time I ever begun an adventure in medias res. I couldn't resist. The players beginning the adventure fleeing before a determined Skyrealm.....

IMO whatever I could have come up with based on the artwork would have been better than the official published adventures...:D
