This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So, has anyone else's adventures (highly likely) been sparked of by cover art from rpg magazines?

One of my D&D adventures was based on this cover:

Think Pied Piper by way of Tarantino....

Dragon covers used to be so good for this.

I really regret that they've largely dropped the idea of depicting strange worlds and ambiguous characters in favor of basic character portraits and action scenes. Then, adding insult to injury, they cover most of those with obnoxious text blurbs.

Doesn't really fire the imagination so much.
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.

I agree that the Dragon Magazine covers were particularly good for this.

I thought this thread was about the cover art of Adventure!.  :)

Indeed. For a while, I kept trying to come up with an adventure that wouldn't be cheesy based on the "chessboard" covers of Dragon in the 180s or thereabouts.

That's one of 'em, but the one I was more specifically thinking of was same artist (Denis Beauvais) but had more action to it.

Edit: Guess I was off (actually, looking at the 180s, I can see the one I was confusing it with.) Three more are 83, 86 and 89:

He's got a gallery:

Looks like those 4 are the only chess ones. Thought there were others.

Cool -- I had (have?) Issue #86 as well.  Finding back issues of Dragon was so cool back in the '80s, before there was any Internet to speak of.

Any kind of cover is cool. I mean I always thought that a rpg rule book cover should tell you something about the game, but if it also inspires you to create an adventure (I mean you read the friggin' book and then are inspired by it's cover to create an adventure using the system you just read) that's like whisky with your coffee...
