This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"Could You Play D&D With A Leftist?"

Quote from: RPGPundit on April 04, 2025, 04:59:34 AMThe point is that no one should be bringing politics into the game. I agree that if you have someone who is pushing right wing politics into the game, it would be as bad.

Yeah, but we all know it's only lefists who do that sort of stuff. They literally cannot help themselves, but I honestly don't blame them because Marxist talking points define every facet of their being. If they can't talk about it, they cease to exist.

And that's not hyperbole.
It's not only leftists that do it. I recently ended a 20-month campaign because our conservative LDS player couldn't stop spouting his self-righteous preachy bullshit (which also included taking joy in people suffering--as long as they were people he/his religion didn't approve of) at the table. He was very quick to claim offense anytime others said something he didn't approve of, but he sure loved to sling his own shit at everyone else.

Odd behavior for a Mormon in my experience.  To me they are all kooky in their faith position, but I have never seen one act like that.  All religious zealots can be pretty tiresome but this particular situation has me intrigued...what exactly sort of suffering was he taking such great joy in?
Most directly, he is a disabled vet and seems overjoyed at seeing the VA in chaos after recent government actions. He is happy that the VA has cut programs (and those working in them) that "don't benefit him"--even as another player at the table is a vet that does (now did) benefit from those programs and a third player is a VA employee (thankfully still employed). He's also going through a divorce right now, and it's made him into a bigger ass than ever before as he gets 'guidance' on how to deal with it.

The VA always seems to be involved with chaos and everyone I know who as interacted with the VA seems to feel some major changes are needed.  I am not so sure complaint about them is as big a deal as the complete indifference of the plight of the people directly interacting with him.  Divorce makes everyone a bigger ass.

That was pretty tame compared to what I was expecting though.  I was prepared to hear stories about him relishing in seeing dead kids or something.

He didn't have to be offensive towards all of humanity, just being offensive towards the other players at the table was enough that I didn't enjoy gaming with him any longer.

Spooky

I could play Machineguns and Magic with an Agnostic.
Motoko Kusanagi is Deunan Knute for basic queers

I have a working theory that when times get hard, some people lash out at everyone around them because they simply can't process all the shit they're going through.  It's a cognitive septic overflow so to speak.  We all have our limits, and without help we can't get better.  I honestly feel bad for people like that, but I understand how nobody (myself included) wants to get someone else's shit thrown on them (especially when they not at the point where they actively want to stop flinging it around).

I have a second theory that thanks to everyone spending so much of their lives on the internet, the human brain lacks the ability to process the constant bombardment of social media from a planet full of strangers, constantly talking about the various ways we're all doomed and how we're fools for buying into it.  I remember hearing stories of counselors mocking their patients for being genuinely anxious about Biden's presidency; I'd be certain of the same thing happening now, except I suspect most counselors are left-leaning and would say "you're right to fear Trump!"

Sorry, I'm rambling.  I wish people were more compassionate, but I also understand the desire to not get hurt trying to help.
