This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Core books and your own world should be enough to keep any group playing for decades.

Theoretically all a theater needs is an empty stage and a blank pad of paper. Why do they keep performing Shakespeare and licensing existing plays?

Quote from: daniel_ream;580056The car metaphor was a poor one to start with, as the OP stipulated that we've all already bought the core book.

A better metaphor would have been "some people buy a car off the lot and drive it happily for ten years without ever modifying it; other people bolt airplane wings on the backs of their Honda Civics and install sound systems capable of bringing down low-flying satellites".

...or we leave the car "as is" but pave us some brand new roads to drive it on, possibly through unexplored terrain.

(For the metaphorically challenged, I'm referring to the "car" as the core rules, and the "road" as the setting/milieu/game world, or whatever.)

I can start providing colour commentary on the posts for you, if you want.

What are you talking about I totally thought you were building a blast furnance in your garden. I am always confused with US zoning laws though as to why they allow this sort of stuff.

I work in theatre and I wish they would just keep performing Shakespeare and licensing existing plays.
Seen too many 'modern' plays and non-plays to last me a lifetime!

I had to put the furnace in the garage instead, the launch pad for phase II of my X Prize winning rocket took up the whole yard.

He just never found the time to watch Monty Python, Benny Hill, or Mr. Bean, preferring instead the dark side... Doc Martin, perhaps?...

People like to buy stuff.

DIY only appeals to a subset of any hobby group.

And that's cool.

Exactly.

I wonder, though, how much of an interest there would be in bare-bones type stuff.  World maps with only terrain features, dungeon maps that are otherwise un-stocked, NPCs that are pretty much stats only...  Stuff to get people started when they don't have the time to scratch build.

I have always liked the idea of mid-sized setting modules, like an area with a few towns and a few adventures and a lot of interesting details that GM's can plug in easily.

I've Always known that if I every published GuildSchool, 'Miston, held by the GiantClan" would be my fist module, because aside from how it fits in my setting, it could be plugged into any setting easily as a play area for a while.

That is how TSR did quite a few of the original modules.  There was clearly a place in Greyhawk or the Forgotten Realms where they fit, but the area was generic enough to drop down pretty much anywhere.

Perhaps some follow up material with a few cities to go with the world map.  Then some other stuff with more cities and more details on the existing cities and countries.  Maybe even some of it could be along the lines of web-only content; the capital of some major kingdom if you bought the setting book, in a printable and editable format.

Yeah, I would actually do a lot smaller scale...but do a lot of drilldown.  Go into guilds, groups, relationships, history, etc.  Make the area more rich than big.
I see I have a page for the begining years of the Miston campaign, which is actualy still ongoing.
