This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Converting Starcluster to Genre Division and vice-versa

Ok, I'm just about ready to type up my review of Starcluster 2e. Here's the short form:  I love the game.  The setting is great, the character creation is awesome.

The system? Well, there's nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't quite float my boat.

One system I really dug that I recently read (and reviewed) was the "Genre Division" system used in Coyote Trail.   But the biggest thing that I felt was lacking in Coyote Trail (probably because I'd been reading all those cool Flying Mice games like Starcluster, FTL Now, In Harm's Way and Cold Space) was a character creation system that let you do traveller-style "Prior history" the way Starcluster does.

So is there anyone out there (one of the authors of one of the two systems perhaps?) who would dare to figure out a way to convert the Starcluster mechanics to the 2d6 system of Genre Division? Or at least just figure out a way to create Starcluster-style tables for education/employment prior-history for the Coyote Trail setting?

I hope you're physically looking at a copy of Starcluster as you write this, because THAT is precisely the right way to do "Prior history".  Blatantly plagiarize them; I want something as cool as that.  It doesn't have to be cooler (I'm not sure it can be) but it damn well better not be less cool. :D

I'd say it's closer to traveller than Starcluster. It's my take on it, and as always, my take is simplified to its core. Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but it did only take me a few hours. If you want anything more complicated, someone else will have to do it as that's not what genreDiversion games are all about. :p

Ok, not bad. Starcluster's is more thorough, which I like.  Its funny, Clash could teach you guys a thing or two about how to be thorough in a good way when that's needed (and there are lots of times when it is needed for sheer coolness); and you guys could teach him or two about having a more streamlined system of mechanics, as well as good layout.

The purpose of these games is to get started quickly, not to be thorough.

I like it Brett! Light, but flavorful! The Events are a nice Travelleresque touch.

Yup, the events are a nice touch.

So, what about a system conversion guide? Or would that just be too much trouble?  Hell, if you did one, then you could include it in your next product (since you seem to like putting conversion guides in there anyways).

I'll have to get together with Clash on that.

Clash and I actually have a joint project planned, using Coyote Trail as a core.

It's an historical game, Pundit. PIG will be publishing it, I'll be developing it using PIG's GDi ruleset, and Brett will be laying it out. That's a win win situation in my book. :D

That sounds absolutely excellent. Make sure you use the education/career tables like you had in your Starcluster system!! Open point-buy SUCKS ASS!!
