Quote from: GameDaddy;402577I posted on the stack exchange, however quit posting both questions and answers when a member over there dissed on my questions.
What do you mean dissed? If there a problem I have a high enough rep that I can fix people doing editing crap.
Quote from: GameDaddy;402577The Stack Exchange is game design by the masses. The only real problem with that is, if your gain comes at the expense of another member, as opposed to complementing another members contribution, you'll soon end up with just a few hogs in heaven.
Well many users came from Stack Overflow which is highly focused on technical questons as related to programming. The moderators and later the high rep users are all aware of the problem with programming forums and their problems. I.e. Language wars which is the programming version of edition wars.
On Stack Overflow these problems are largely non-existent. The price is that it is a highly technical place. There is little of chit-chat that makes up a forum community. The type of chit chat makes people feel they are part of a community.
The experienced Stack Overflow users know that overly broad question (which was one of the comments on your questions) lead to rambling answers with no real resolution. Some are rude and a bit of dick about pointing this out. Instead of the approach that I favor which is work with the user to make a question that you can get an answers for. Or in the case of community wiki questions a good lead that generates looks of solid items for the follow ups.
Because of the community factor I do not believe that RPG Stack Exchange will replace this site, Enworld, and other forums. I do view it as a complement. We all know that many legitimate questions devolve into personal argument between a small group of users. The Stack Exchange format I believe will and has created a place where people can ask RPG questions or share knowledge about RPGs without devolving into a personal battle 10 or 15 replies down the line.
Now RPG Stack Exchange could have problem anyway because it only has 400 users, 1 with the ability to use the moderator tools, 4 with the ability to edit other people posts (including me). Despite being the answer man for D&D 4e. Bryant (the top user) could be a problem in regards to other games or editions.
But I consider that somewhat unlikely at this point given the tone of his answers over the past several weeks. Quite simply he not acting like a dick, being genuinely helpful and his reputation score reflects that.
Finally there is me with the second highest reputation. Quite simply if I people being dicks I will call them on it and will do something about it. And I already dealt with a couple who dissed people with the equivalent of Read the Fucking Manual or Google it comment. I don't have as high of a rep as Bryant because there most of the poster are 4e gamers.
I can see heavy participation in Stack Exchange not for everybody. But if you do have a specific question about RPG you should try it in addition to here and the other places you hangout. I think overall you get some pretty good answers without having to wade through a lot of chatter.
