This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Classic Traveller CD-ROM

Just in case anyone here hasn't heard, FFE has finally shipped the Classic Traveller Canon CD-ROM.  I received mine on the weekend and have been looking it through during lunch breaks at work.

Overall, scan quality is pretty good, though LBB6 (Scouts) and Adventure 10 (Safari Ship) are a bit blurry.  I've come across one or two upside-down pages, but nothing horrible, certainly not on the scale I've heard about the MT CD-ROM.  Haven't tested the OCR yet, but I'll be giving that a run when I make a skills document for my players.

Despite owning a complete set of reprints and a few copies of the rules and miscellaneous supplements and other books, I think the CD-ROM is a great deal so far.  The addition of a couple of modules which I've never had the pleasure of owning (Tarsus, Beltstrike, Spinward Marches Campaign) make the pot even sweeter.  If the OCR proves good, I'll definitely put in an order for the JTAS and Third-party volumes.

I'm pretty sure the only things on that disk I don't own are Spinward Marches Campaign and the Games.  And it is still a bargain.

Have you looked at Don McKinney's timeline yet?  I've got a "special thanks" credit in there that I'm pretty proud of.  I put in several hours of work helping him spiff that up.  Don did all the heavy lifting, I mostly nitpicked his work.  But it was a lot of constructive nitpicking.

I haven't seen it...link?  Not a big 3I person (homebrew all the way!), but I like seeing what others have done with it.

I brought it up because it was supposed to be included as bonus material on the CD-ROM.  Did it get dropped?  Either way, it is also available here.

Aw, man, that would've been a cool addition.  I don't see it on the TOC and it wasn't appended to the introductory books; scanned the files on the CD itself, too, and didn't see it.

Thanks for the link!

Still waiting ... boy, I really want it now. Even if only for that elusive LBB7. :cheerleader:

This is definitely high up on my "to buy" list for the year.  This and Traveller 5th.

Mickazoid at travellerrpg.com has posted up a few zoomed-in samples of some of the scans here to illustrate the range of quality on the pdfs.  She also has a sample of the OCRing on the next page of that thread.  It looks a little dodgy, but I still haven't tested it out for myself; I've been too occupied digging into the modules.

If the OCR is uncorrected throughout, I'll be a bit disappointed, but on the whole, $35 is a good buy just to have electronic copies of everything.

T5? You are aware this is 2007, and not 2010 or so, right? ;)

On the OCR quality: I've started piecing together my skills document and haven't really run into any weird character problems or egregious mis-readings.  It looks like the samples Mickazoid posted to travellerrpg.com are from the blurrier scans on the CD.  I expect the Scouts book will cause some problems in this regard, but so far so good.
