This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I've been out of the loop for another year.  What's out that's new, interesting, redone, redressed, or regurgitated?

Aces and Eights = Best Western RPG ever made. So good, in fact, that people who normally hate Westerns salivate over the thing.

YMMV. (Pundit's does)

D&D 4e is out. Some people really like it, some people really hate it. It runs pretty well, except for its skill system, which is still having the bugs ironed out.

Quote from: J Arcane;240413Warhammer 40k finally got a roleplaying game.  And it owns your face.  And mine.

We sold out of DARK HERESY within the first week that it was releaseerde. Done that at least once or twice since then. WARHAMMER 40K and DARK HERESY are pretty darn popular at our store and in the Cincinnatii area in general.

I'm sorely tempted to get Dark Heresy, but I'm not sure I could get my players into it since they have ZERO experience with GW, WH or WH40K.

That's a good thing.  Seriously, there's fuckpiles of canon issues in 40k, having players who actually know them would be far more a curse than a blessing.

Just show them the book, that was all it took for me.  Maybe run a sample combat session, just roll up random characters and go free-for-all or do a sample encounter with one of the monsters from the back of the book.

What about for people who are not interested in combat so much as they are interested in major roleplaying events?

We've had gaming sessions where the dice were broken out only a couple times...

...we've had whole weekend gaming sessions that didn't involve any combat whatsoever.

So, you can see my dilemma!

Well, there's a lot of room for all kinds of investigative bits and roleplaying bits as well.  Combat's kind of inevitable, in that sooner or later the heretic must be purged, but I could easily see playing out a session where most of it's investigative build-up to one final dramatic action sequence at the resolution.

Also, the combat really is hella fun, fun enough that I could honestly see it making a convert out of even the most hardened anti-combat types.  The critical tables alone make for some awesomely violent ends.  ;)

Do I remember correctly that you live in the St. Louis area and sometimes play at the Fantasy Shop in St. Charles?  Or have I mixed you up with someone else?
