Character Do-Overs

We are probably just under a dozen sessions into our Exalted game. They're relatively short sessions - we probably only get 2-3 hours of play in every few weeks, so figure it's the equivalent of 5-6 "regular" 4-5 hour sessions. Since we don't play often (this time around we'll be going for a month without playing) it definitely doesn't seem like things are speeding along.

Anyway, the system is relatively new - to myself and the players. In the very beginning I had said that we would evaluate the characters after a few sessions and tweak them out to better fit the players' expectations and how their vision of the characters had evolved. It wound up being not until this current gap that we did so - I basically allowed each player to rebuild their characters.

Two of them, including my wife's character, went through drastic changes including rearranging abilities and Charms. One of them just swapped some spells around.

All I have to say is this is one of the best ideas I've had. Sure, it leads to some continuity problems - one of the PCs is losing a signature weapon and replacing it with something much different. Had I more experience with the system the rewrites might not have been as necessary - but for sure I'm going to do something similar again. If we start Tribe 8, it will probably be only minor tweaks after an introductory session instead of 8-10 sessions in though.

So does anyone do anything else like this? Would it totally ruin your game if, a half dozen sessions in, everyone's characters went through minor to major changes? As a player is there a reason you wouldn't take a GM up on this kind of offer besides being satisfied with your character?

I totally do this with almost every game, if the players (and / or GM) haven't played the game a lot, yet, and thus aren't familiar with how things work.

It's a really good idea, because nobody likes to be stuck with shitty characters.

In my BESM game, frex, one of the players built a water elemental with Telekinesis (water) and some other traits.

Found out after getting dunked in the ocean that she didn't have Life Support (which allows you to survive underwater and not need to breathe and such).  Whoops!

I do something simiar too. If I'm running a game for the first time, I usually run it as a short campaign (or a one shot, with character creation) so we can all learn the rules together.

After the games over,  I have the full intention of starting ove. However, sometimes those original characters stick and we don't change anything.

I've run games where I've let players rewrite there characters between sessions as often as they like.  No one abused the priviledge and a good time was had by all.

I wouldn't do that with every group or every campaign though.
