Honestly? It's the loss of the store to destroy stock instead of selling it. They still pay the distributor for the books. Who in turn pay the publisher. Who in turn pays Venger. Venger gets paid regardless.

The store owner was not very smart in this. They alienated a longstanding customer and the sales they brought to the store. on top of destroying stock.

Yeah, if the store owner was devious, he would have just defaced them and claimed they were damaged in transit. Then, just not reordered them.

Not the point, but I'm curious the percentage of sales that come from stores versus online these days.
Also, is there a large difference in sales from stores you do events for?

Just to clear up this point, in case anyone's interested...

I went to several hobby shops and game stores in my area.  I asked them if they'd take a couple books.  Almost every place said yes.  They gave me $30 per book so they could sell them for $60 each.  I did get paid up-front.  The guy from Misty Mountain Games said he couldn't sell them.  I don't know how hard it could be.  I've been selling Cha'alt and Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise left and right through kickstarter and direct sales.
