This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Can we write stand-ins for real minorities with tact?

So I read the gomakemeasandwich review of the 5e ravenloft module and the counter review on injusticegamer. I think both raise good points but ultimately fail to provide solutions. Perpetuating negative stereotypes against ethnic minorities and the disabled is wrong, but that means we should rewrite them with more nuance rather than censor anything we consider offensive or wave away the problem as white people complaining about their privilege to absolve ourselves of responsibility. The only way to solve problems is to engage with them.

The vistani and mongrelfolk should be rewritten as persecuted minorities to be rescued, not monsters to be slaughtered for experience points and loot. Did we learn nothing from playing PowerKill? I'm of the opinion that experience and loot should be won through non-violent solutions a la Planescape Torment, which frees up monsters like orcs and drow and so forth to be rewritten as persecuted minorities in need of rescuing rather than one-dimensional bags of loot and XP. I am aware of the "mighty whitey" cliche where white people run around saving minorities to deflect their own guilt about persecuting them in the first place, but IIRC most gamers are white males and thus that result is unavoidable.

I welcome your thoughts on this matter.
