This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Clue me in  then. I don't own any D&D settings.

Dumarest, stuff I'm best known for includes managing TSR's D&D game world (Mystara and the Hollow World), the D&D Gazetteers, Trail Maps, getting TSR's management to authorize the D&D Rules Cyclopedia, and the series of stories in Dragon Magazine in the 80s and 90s called Voyage of the Princess Ark.  The latter is the inspirational source for my present work, the World of Calidar.

And it's artisanal awesome sauce. Calidar is wonderfully written and the maps are incredible. You can support the cartographer on patreon and get new digital maps of the setting!

Thank you. You know what, I think I read some of those Princess Ark stories way back when! Was that the hot air balloon traveling from place to place? That was pretty neat. Calidar sounds cool. Thanks again.

You must be thinking of the Oostdok blimps.  These were a gnomish airships from the Hollow World.  This was a funny episode.  The Princess Ark is actually an Alphatian skyship.  I wanted to continue writing the stories as a professional author, but WotC would not give me permission or let go of the copyright.  So, I rebooted the series with a new crew, a new ship... and an entire game world to wrap around everything!  There are of course some common points between Mystara and Calidar.  It turns out that I'm much better off writing Calidar material, simply because I can create anew, without the baggage of Mystara and the necessary approval process at WotC, which I think would have broken the camel's back.

I'm glad you carried on anyway and probably it's for the best to control the IP yourself now.

Now I remember the flying ship...I guess the gnomes made an impression!

So far so good.  I nearly did not return to writing after TSR went down and I left the industry.  It was only at the insistence of my better half, 15 years later, that I did.  Of course, I'll never live as comfortably as I had become accustomed to, but at least I am doing what I want for now.  The present project has funded.  It's June, though.  It's a slow month.  People are on summer vacation mode right now.

Bruce Heard

Hi All.  Guess what... we've not only funded, but have also flown past the first stretch goal.  Life is good.

Very cool. It must be gratifying to see how many people are interested, especially after going through all that with TSR or whoever they are now.
