This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So, anyone know any further info about this, particularly the system?

And are we excited about this?

I wrote a game called After Sundown. You can Bittorrent it for free, or Buy it for a dollar. Either way.

Not really. Where's the setting? BB was a fun b-movie take on a modern doc savage. but it was just one movie.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

I always said if they could get W D Richter to help put Buckaroo Banzai and Big Trouble in Little China in the same license, I probably would ever need to play anything else.

I hope it's good.

I like Adamant on principle, but their pulp stuff was kinda hit or miss.

Buckaroo Banzai was great... but a big element of the big appeal, for me, was the feeling that it was part of something much bigger... a series of stories that extended back and forward.
The characters weren't really introduced, stuff wasn't explained... because we were assumed to already be fans... at least that's how it felt to me. Like discovering one issue of some long-running comic book series.
But since no more movies ever came... there isn't much there to base a game on... most of the setting will have to be from scratch.

You could start at World Watch Online

Internalize the mindset, and just read the newspaper. You'll get plenty of ideas. It's like Cthulhu--once you get the lens, anything you observe through it can be Banzai-ed.

There're also the novel and some comics, but I think everyone would be better off just taking off from the movie. BB's one of those properties that would benefit immensely from conflicting canon.

I was listening to the soundtrack last weekend. Prescient?

Would this have been better as a new IP?

So really, not a whole lot of reason to write up a dedicated game for it... since it's best served by everyone going off in their own direction anyway? Use Savage Worlds or somesuch and just make shit up.

stu2000

Right. I mean--I like that they've made a game. That property means a lot to me and I appreciate that there's another venue for it. But I've never hit a snag using GURPs, Hero, Fudge, or Corps for B. Banzai adventures. I don't particularly like Savage Worlds, but there's no reason it wouldn't work. It'd be ideal for a big engagement like the battle at YoYoDyne.

I've never had a problem with folks who've seen the movie playing Perfect Tommy or Reno, or a known Hong Kong Cavalier. I've never had a severe problem with folks coming up with their own odd specialists. I think that's one of the resons I like a detailed character sheet for this world. The characters tend to be oddball rennaisance-types. Highly skilled, but not easily characterized. Players like knowing there may be more to their characters than meets the eye.

I haven't let anyone play BB, because he's essentially a superhero.

NO , IT WASN'T.

The scriptwriter had over 40 other Buckaroo Banzai stories that he had typed up over the years sitting at his home when he was writing the script for the movie.

The paperback book novel of the movie (NOT an 'adaptation') had five times more story included and footnotes on various pages that referred to at least ten other past adventures of the group.

Good Luck.

They didn't print enough of them

That book is now in the collector's item or rarities realm of sci-fi fan collectibles.

I bought one when I was a teenager and the movie was still in theaters. The same exec at the studio that hated the movie probably sabotaged the marketing and promotion stuff as well - like the paperback novel.

The book is told from the viewpoint of the character 'Reno' - because he is the chronicler of adventures for Team Banzai. So, in scenes where he wasn't present in the movie he says things like "I later heard this from _____ ..." and similiar lead-in comments.
