This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

BRP/MRQ Traveller?!

In the "you got your peanut butter in my chocolate" dept...

I thought it was posted here, but it might've been rpg.net, but someone was talking about the guy who was working on the new version of Classic Traveller having to stop working on it due to licensing problems.

(see:  http://www.traveller.comstar-games.com/viewtopic.php?t=648 )

Just got this from the BRP Yahoo group:

Ah well, gist is MJD _was_ developing an updated/revised version of
Classic Traveller for possible publication via Avenger/Comstar but
Marc Miller's nixed that, so MJD has decided to develop a new set of
SF rules for Avenger's non-canon Traveller stuff (including Bryan
Gibson's Terran Praesidium) and has indicated that it's BRP - the
exact quaote was "Ok, it's BRP".

Whether it's licensed from Chaosium (enormously unlikely I think), an
RQSTL or OGL job using the MRQ SRD or a "written from scratch but BRP
compatible because rules can't be copyrighted" I'm not sure.

Now, i just ordered the reprint of collected LBB's 0-3. (and yes #&@* i found out they have a collected 0-8 too late, grrr! :brood: )  I stared playing Traveller right after i first learned D&D around '79-'80, and have fond remembrances of it, esp. the crazy character career creation.

anyone else have any insight on this new turn of events?  any play testers for it post here?

I have nothing official to add, but wow, that's interesting.  I did something along these lines shortly after Ringworld was released, converting Traveller alien stats to BRP.  Much as I've always loved the CT character generation and simplicity of mechanics, the Ringworld/BRP rules fit like a glove.

I always thought BRP was well-suited to science fiction.  This could prove interesting...

Somewhere on a CD-ROM I have some BRP Traveller notes I downloadized from the interwebwork.  Ian, were those yours, man?

Nope, not mine.  My notes pre-date the Information Super Highway (c. 1988, if I recall correctly) and are still sitting in the bottom of my Ringworld box.  I'd like to see these notes you've mentioned.

Those were the very first origins of StarCluster, when I began trying to marry Ringworld/BRP style percentile mechanics with Traveller-style lifepath chargen. Unfortunately, I threw those notes away long ago.

Frankly, I think this turn of events is for the best.  I have some moles in the playtest. (Yes, I know people!  Really!  I'm important!) Everything I've been told left me with the impression that ACT was going too far from Classic Trav to be of use to the old fans but nothing being added was really designed around the idea of drawing in new players.  Based upon my limited information, the whole thing was starting to look like a vanity project/niche game for the hardcore Trav grognard.

Unfortunately, that's also my read of T5 at this point, but that's another post for another day.

I would assume Chaosium, though they don't have any distribution rights.

ACT is on indefinate hold. ACT was IMO getting close to an ideal CT (though there was some skill, gear, etc. creep) though it couldn't use the High Guard ship lines as it had some additions. It was certainly closer to CT than what I've seen of T5 (and I've had playtest access to both). But that's moot now.

There is a new ruleset that will be posted for playtest soon, it won't be Traveller but will be scifi, so as not to run into the same problem ACT did (T5). And as per the SOTI, it will be derived from some 20+ year old system that both Comstar and MJD (of Avenger) had idependant ideas on.

Weird.  At just a first glance, his fellow's attribute rolls run strongly counter to what I had bashed out years ago.  For instance, his average Vargr is stronger and hardier than an average human while being no more dextrous, which is pretty much the opposite of how its always been presented in Traveller.  His Droyne are too strong, too.  And why would population level have an effect on appearance?

Interesting, but it makes me want to pull my copy of Ringworld off the shelf and have another go at a conversion.

Update: Avenger/Comstar Translight (i.e. the new ACT) has entered the playtest stage. And it will be familiar to those who've played BRP games. However it won't be Traveller in either rules or setting.

I am in the playtest and have been in previous playtests/games with some people who write Traveller products for Avenger but that's it.
