What intrinsic effect does a person being a practicing satanist, have on their personality?

I've gamed with several avowed Satanists.

Mostly they were pretty entertaining.  No one knows how ridiculous Satanism is better than an actual Satanist.

Mind, these were LaVey types, not like actual demon worshippers, like the guys who sacrifice cows outside of town here.

This bias for or against Palladium players seems kind of funny to me.

Of course I've got a reason to be biased in favor of Palladium players - at least locally. Remember about three years ago you guys gave me shit for mentioning the young women gamers that stopped by the store?

Did you forgett that one of the most intelligent and attractive one of those had a group that was all young women?  Well, Her preferred game to run is RIFTS/Palladium. (brunette hair, gorgeous blue eyes, tall, great smile....)

So I got a reason to at least give it a fair chance locally.

I've never met any of the ones who were into sacrificing cows and other animals.  (If I did, they didn't mention anything about it).

The few avowed "satanists" I've met over the years, were either LaVey types or ones who were just doing it as a joke when they played in heavy metal bands back in the 1980's and/or early 1990's.  The latter were obviously not real satanists for the most part.  No idea what LaVey types' intentions were, as to whether it was just an attention/ego-trip thing for them, or whether it was a rebellion against their own religious upbringing.

With that being said, many people I've known over the years whom had a chip on their shoulder about their own religious upbringing, typically "rebelled" by more convention means such as: leaving the religion, stopped attending religious institutions, drinking a lot, promiscuous sex, partying too much, hanging out with the wrong crowd, etc ... and other typical high school or college years type crap.

LeVeyan Satanists are fun to hang out with, it is the Aleister Crowley types that are true nutbag pains in the ass.

I'd have one of those fruity south pacific style drinks in a coconut with Boyd Rice any day of the week.

Except Sunday; I go to church most Sundays, then play AD&D in the afternoon.

I haven't met many amusing or interesting LaVey type satanists.

The ones I have met over the years, seemed like boring wannabe-intellectual types with a cynical streak.  In another time and place, they would be similar to "Willy Loman" (from the book "Death of a Salesman") or a boring college professor.

I don't think I've met any Aleister Crowley types yet.

What exactly were annoying about them?

thedungeondelver

I haven't honestly met any "real" satanists (of the crowleyan or laveyan stripe) but from what I'm told the vast majority of them are just atheists trying to get a rise out of people.

Well there was that one guy who tried to put a hex on people over at rpg.net, but he was obviously crazy.

In other words, the types who are into "satanism" for the attention and/or ego-trip reasons.  Otherwise they would be just another anonymous face in the crowd of everyday average people.  Many people get over this by the time they reach a certain age (sometime in one's late 20's to 30's).

With that being said, claiming to be a satanist doesn't seem to get much of a rise out of many people anymore.  The more likely response to such satanic individuals is:  "Who's this joker think he is?  Alice Cooper?"

Probably resembles a cartoon character, more than anything else.

So the wide variety and styles of play of D&Ders are valid, but every Palladium gamer all plays the same way?

Seriously, please knock off the creepy gamer on the internet routine.

@actual topic: I seriously do hope palladium goes under. He fucks up, his fans save him, he goes ahead and treats someone poorly, his fans make excuses.
Rinse and repeat.
It is getting boring.

@second topic: I don't game with hardcore DSA players anymore either. Their playstyle and mine are not compatible.

The LeVeyan Satanists I've met look at the "religion" with a sense of humor based around enlightened self-interest. LeVey started out as a con man/hustler and it shows in amusing ways.

Aleister Crowley types that I've met tend to be divorced from reality in minor to major degrees. They believe that they can conjure demons and perform black magic, kinda like the antithesis of a fluffy-bunny wiccan. You've probably met one if you have ever had to deal with someone who thinks that the Necronomican is real and not the product of H.P. Lovecraft's horror fiction.

I met a guy like that in the navy.  He wouldn't believe that the necronomicon was fiction.

I've known a lot of Crowley type dudes. They remind me of "The men who stair at goats."

"invisibility is one of the powers, though we eventually adapted it as ways of not being seen."

"like camouflage?"

"no, not like camouflage"
