Title: Blast from the Past: FGU Wild West
Post by: Allensh on October 09, 2007, 09:09:33 PM
Anyone play this back in th day, or more recently?

Just got a copy to replace one lost years ago. I remember we thought this was so cool because horses had their own character sheets :) We stuck with Boot Hill 2nd edition though, but as I read this now, it looks a lot better to me than it did then. No Aces & Eights, mind you, but a decent game.

I've still got that game somewhere. I think we played a session or two. I found it a bit clunky.

I wish I could explain the love for the old FGU games. I can't. They ranged from clunky to unplayable, but I sure thought they were cool. They quickly covered a wide range of genres, during the time I was getting into hobby games, with kind of a "try out a rule and see what sticks" haphazard approach to design. I guess it gave me permission to houserule, which stimulated my interest in design, and involved me heavily with the games.

I mean, I guess that's why I love them. But I can't explain why anyone else loves them. I liked OW.

There is a certain charm to them. I mean, I've still got WW long after I got rid of almost everything else. I'd still run V&V for my old group if I lived near them.

I've read it, never ran it.  Looks pretty solid.

By the way some guy on the net got the authors permission to post it up online.

In case anybody wants to take a gander at it.

Nice link and cool of FGU to allow it.  Is the RPC up there?  Looks like it is needed to play.

A very cutting edge game, I see it uses scripted combat in 30.1. :)

By the way, I also have this love of FGU games, even when clunky.  Maybe because the tone and rest of the game seems well thought out and convey in a clear way.  Aftermath! and Bushido are exceelent at evoking their genres.

Yet however, much I love Aftermath! the melee combat system is too difficult in play to flow smoothly, I'm looking at you WDM.  The gun and explosive rules, superb, the best of its time IMHO.

En Garde did it first, as far as I know.

I think the rights reverted to the original authors some time ago, since the game hasn't been kept in print. FGU only seems to hang onto certain games like V&V, Aftermath. Bushido and Space Opera that it feels could still be profitable for them. I think a PDF of Wild West would sell but probably not as much as the others.

I dont think I have enjoyed the system for any of FGU's games. The settings and games yes, but never the system.

I thought the system in Flashing Blades was perfectly acceptable. V&V was ok too. Most of the others - yeah, you probably have a point.
