Title: Best & worst Youtube RPG channels?
Post by: S'mon on July 15, 2017, 01:03:36 PM
There are the well known channels like Matt Colville's, but there seem to be a lot of smaller ones around now.

One I like a lot: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCly0Thn_yZouwdJtg7Am62A - Great DudeBro style, completely unpretentious style, enthusiastic, generally not ultra-sophisticated but plenty of good stuff & some to disagree with.
One I think is appalling: https://www.youtube.com/c/HowtobeaGreatGameMasterChannel - worst sort of condescending, pompous, railroading GM style. Youtube kept pushing this at me for weeks!

What are some of your favourites & bete noires?

It's a podcast instead - but I've found One Shot to be reasonably entertaining to have going in the background while I'm doing something else.

WebDM is good when they don't get derailed talking about min/maxing in minute detail. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7XFmdssWgaPzGyGbKk8GaQ) It is way better produced than most and the hosts are appealing to me.

Dungeonlife seems to be the semi-official WoTC Youtube channel. Good way to keep up on 5e. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1u0OTyT5q4Xo4HsKK9vWlA)

Depending in her guest the GM Tips series Satine Phoenix does for Geek and Sundry is worth a watch. (https://youtu.be/Vjz2kIiwLaY) There's a good one about RPGs for kids on there.

Yeah, I find the frontman annoying but the actual content is good.

The "semi-official" BattleTech YouTube sessions can be found here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRDPlyuTAus79rPdFERMS5A/playlists?shelf_id=13&view=50&sort=dd).  It combines the tabletop RPG and wargame.

I only do video games, but I wouldn't mind a critique.

Just search my user name.

For YouTube vids, I guess it comes down to what one finds entertaining/useful.

Terrain making channels are as close as I get to RPG stuff on YouTube. I enjoy the hobby and have learned a lot of techniques. That said, my current groups aren't using minis, though my GM expressed an interest in some YouTuber who makes modular stuff and I turned him onto an even cheaper source for that kind of thing. If he decides to go that route, I'll gladly pick up the knife and foam insulation again.

However, it's a 2nd Edition AD&D game with players from 9 years old to 43, so abstractions may work best.

I have to admit I don't really watch any RPG youtube channels. But I've seen a couple of Dark Albion reviews on youtube, and those were very well done.

I enjoy Tetsubo's RPG videos (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUg5UiMagoWyd8r63KgZnUeZpsb7yQO_5) because most of the time I disagree with him. It allows me to see things from a different perspective which is always good.

Oh yeah, I strongly disagree with pretty much everything Tetsubo says. He's not as condescending as Bacon Battalion but I would still tend to put him in my Worst pile because I think his advice would be very harmful if followed.

I'm glad most people share my high regard for Matt Colville (https://www.youtube.com/user/mcolville)'s vids. Unlike him I'm a fan of Frazetta-esque swords & sorcery tropes, but that's purely personal preference - and if one of your players has an issue with naked virgins shackled to stony altars then sure, cut that stuff out. But his general advice on running the game, his discussions of what worked for him and what went wrong, are consistently excellent.

I like Kurt Wiegel's Game Geeks (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyQwecECtSkKECdtK90UTyQ) reviews. - He has his biases, and he's upfront about it. He was a large factor in my consideration of ever playing two systems I would ordinarily NEVER have played - Savage Worlds and Edge of the Empire. As well as Fantasycraft.

He's probably the one I watch the most... Him and "Talking Bout Games'. Who does some of the most in depth reviews I've heard. And loves lots of differnt stuff.

I liked some of the older youtube channels. I felt they were speaking about a hobby from the heart. I really don't like the newer 'whizz bang wow' factor for people who are just trying to get 'subs'. Is it a comedy show or a show about RPGs?! Rember I have virtually no sense of humor.

Testsubo57s channel - I've not watched him in a few years and I'd be on the left side of politics... But his 'passive aggressive' tone always put me off.

I was a big fan of his show years ago for the same reason. He loves Pathfinder and 3.x and I'm a Palladium/GURPS guy. Then he started doing way too many political videos and I felt if I replied he'd block me.

I like Quest Wise because he does Palladium content:

The ones I prefer generally don't have 'fancy' production values, musical opening title segments, or carefully man-scaped presenters who talk like infomercial personalities.
I like people who come off as just hobbyists sharing their enthusiasm, not trying to come off as showmen or experts.

Tetsubo remains firmly on my 'don't watch' list... disagreeing is one thing, but the guy is just irritating. I'm not aware of his political leanings though.

I'm the same! HD videos with swirling graphics and a funky theme tune. Ugh! 'Infomercial' type speaking... Haw! that's brilliant and so true. :)

Also, the bigger the channel the reviews suddenly tend to get a bit skewed, after all, everyone likes to get free stuff.  So they are unlikely to give out bad reviews. Reminds me of the video game mags. That said, 'Talking About Games' gets free stuff all the time to review. But he always discloses it and I feel does a genuine review. A few years back with the old youtubers you'd see genuine reviews warts and all!

As for Tetsubo I totally agree... irregardless of his political leanings he's pretty obnoxious at the best of times. Now, I do like a bit of social commentary but only when it's put forward by someone who applies logic to everything as opposed to just someone ranting and raving away and preaching at the choir.

Questing Beast (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvYwePdbWSEwUa-Pk02u3Zw) does really nice OSR reviews and mapping tutorials.

I've only recently started watching some of Invictus's (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgHC_LeNpz-YeepnGXKbAzA) Call of Cthulhu videos.  I generally lose interest in watching other people play pretty quickly, but the production values are nice enough and their personalities non-abrasive enough that I've managed a couple episodes.
