Title: Best familiar to complement a healing mage
Post by: Ukid on February 21, 2018, 07:42:49 AM
So I am currently play a healing mage in a custom tabletop created by a friends of mine, and in his universe mages are allowed (and somewhat expected) to have familiars, it is usually an animal or a fantastical beast (there are many fo those), so I was wondering which one would be the best to complement a healing mage in your opinion, as in what kind of element/abilities should i look for?

A leech comes to mind, but that may not be what you are looking for.

Geckos can lose their tail and grow it back, so that might have symbolic value as well.

A gecko actually sounds pretty interesting, great suggestion!

Spider's webbing might be used as a bandage. A Faerie Dragon's euphoric gas breath weapon might come in handy for amputations. And a Crawling Claw would have a lot of uses for a Barber-Surgeon...

Ooh, a donkey!  Almost no one pays attention to donkeys, beyond avoid getting them mad. And they can carry you and or stuff! They can wander about, eating, looking harmless to all but someone's garden... Think of the gossip they could overhear! :)

Snake for the obvious medical symbol connection.

Bee as honey has a medicinal value.

Leech as was noted above.

In Albion, 'familiars' are demons.

It's an old belief that a dog licking a wound could reduce the chance of infection and speed up the healing process.  In a magical world that might literally be true.

A unicorn, with its healing properties, would be a great choice. Of course, you'd have to be a female virgin (and stay that way)!
