Can I get y'all to weigh in on this issue? What is the best OSR monster book (D&D type game), and why is it the best? I'm not sure I want yet another book filled with monsters I already have stats for.
I own the Creature Catalog, and the 1E monster manuals, and Fiend Folio already.
I'm looking for something new to spend my disposable money on now that I have given up smoking. 8)
Note: I cross posted this to DF, but you guys might think of something they don't.
I think the current Hackmaster monster book is really nice. I like the extra information on creatures like yield from the body if killed (medicinal, spell components, food, etc.), combat tactics, ecology, etc. I bought it and I don't even play Hackmaster.
I was going to say the creature catalog, but you already mentioned it ;-). One of the Ravenloft bestiaries was pretty good too
Tome of Horrors Complete?
AD&D 2e Monster Manual.
Oh, you mean new stuff? I can warn you off something: do not get the Teratic Tome. Utter crap for the most part.
The 2e Compendium? That big binder thing? Or is the question for new stuff?
I am deeply proud of the Monsterpedia section within Arcana Rising. A professional scholar would probably still find plenty to quibble with, but I put a lot of work into synthesizing a uniquely folkloric take on the majority of the D&D canon monsters, and I'm quite happy with the results, especially with they way they link together with the planar geopolitics of the setting.
I recommend checking it out.

New stuff for the most part. :)

Sold! I grabbed it and your Heavens Shadow game. :)
I'll look over the pdfs when more awake, and the hard copies will be here in a week or so.
