Title: BBEGs and Drug Companies
Post by: Drohem on May 02, 2013, 11:48:27 AM
We've all seen the intensity of the drug companies trying to push new drugs on us for, well, everything under the sun on TV commercials.  While watching TV last night I started thinking about all the funky names that they come up with for these new drugs that sprout like weeds.  Well, it sparked an idea.

I want to run a campaign were all the villains are named after TV commercial drugs!  Off the top of my head, I think that this will work particularly well for a Dungeon Crawl Classics game or a Talislanta game.  Although, it will probably work out fine for most games.

At some point in the future, players in my games might hear a soliloquy from Captain Cialis or the necromancer Levitra! :)

P.S. - OK, I just realized that the two drug names that I remember from commercials are for ED.  What the hell?!  Fucking insidious TV advertisements!  This is probably a function of the overwhelming number of ED drugs on the market and commercial saturation, and NOT some subconscious mumbo-jumbo! LOL! :D

After years of meditation and contemplation of the essence of life, I will at last achieve enlightenment, ascending the pinnacle of Astrazeneca.

If you want a completely silly game, why not.

Sure, point taken for the most part.  However, one man's silly could be another man's fun.  Honestly, I do feel that some of these drug names wouldn't make bad fantasy or alien names. :)

For one one - shot, when we were terribly bored, we came up with an idea of naming every one of our PCs on a drink/brand of alcohol. So you had captain Jack Smirnoff, Someone Margaritta and Someone Whisky from what I recall. It was very, very silly.

Just a warning/notice, so to speak - it'll be very silly. Famous actor's names are easier to let go on jokes, than such notices. Unless those drug brands aren't very famous.

A pretty significant number of names in (A)D&D are terrible unfunny puns.  These aren't any different.  It's entertainment, man.

One of my best friends' character in AD&D back in France was a Chaotic Neutral fighter named "Advil." This character was hilarious, and awesome. :)

Drug names are like car names.  They're chosen to be unique words for SEO enhancement and avoiding unfortunate associations.  Where drug names tend towards the exotic (gotta sound all science-y and shit), car names tend towards the mellifluous and evocative.

I needed a fantasy world name. I was working in a convenience store. I saw the "Alavert" package on the rack, flipped it, and had the "World of Trevala".

The cool thing about medical names is that you get usually two names for the price of one. Almost all prescription meds have a brand name and a chemical name, and often different brand names as you cross national boundaries. It's really a solid source of alphabet soup demonic names at the very least.

Take Humira, commonly known demon of fading vanity, bringer of youthful delusions to the arthritic, whose true name for summoning is Adalimumab.

Or Acetominophen, nullifier of pain for the sacrifice of livers. Known across the great waters as Paracetamol, pain allever and ritualistic sacrifice to the young, bored, and indulgent. The vulgar sometimes speak of the abyssal power as Lord Tylenol. It holds great enmity against the Bayer, a.k.a. Anacin the thief of pain (Anadin, across the waters).
