This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Bait and Switch experiences with purchasing RPGs

I sometimes consider tracking down a copy of the old Indiana Jones game and giving it another try.  I too was put off by the lack of chargen, but I think it could maybe work nowadays, what with this magical new era of gay pudding-eating cowboy rpgs and what all.  Besides, we could just take turns playing Indy.

Ha!  I pre-dated that by 10 years at least. :)

Of course, I do love me some Midnight...

TSR's Indiana Jones game.

I expected, you know, a traditional RPG. Y'know, where you can make your own characters.

Instead, you get to play your own character. If you're the second one to the game, you get to play Sala. Third, short round. Have fun.

God, you're right! I had forgotten all about that - it was THE bait and switch game of my youth. I was all ready to make up cool characters and have them adventure side-by-side with Indy, only to run into the same problem you did.

After the original White Wolf "Vampire" game had been released, they announced a second game -- about Werewolves.  I thought this would mean that, like Vampire, you could play a werewolf character from literature or film -- someone who had been turned into a werewolf and having to deal with the horror of what they turn into each full moon.  Like "An American Werewolf in London" or "The Howling"...

No sir!  Instead you get Friendly, Furry, Hippy, Tree-Hugging super hero wolf men with magic powers and swords they can carry in their mouths fighting the evil polluters and corporate bad guys!

You got that right! I was totally crest-fallen. There hasn't been a good werewolf game EVER in my opinion.

Actually, I believe in one of the later modules/gm screen booklet/suppliment there were rules on creating your own character..

It didn't make the game any better when you were still running through MODULES BASED ON THE EXACT PLOT OF THE MOVIES.

There's a copy of the "Temple of Doom" sourcebook at one of the local stores.
