This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Bait and Switch experiences with purchasing RPGs

Quote from: RedFoxNecessary Evil - Yay, you get to play supervillains!  Umm, except you're really working for the good guys.  And doing nasty villainous things is extremely detrimental to your group in the packaged campaign.  Which is half-finished.  And the super-powers system is rather sparse and lacking.  Umm, damn.

The worst part was that the book was delayed for months.  Apparently not for purposes of making sure it was complete or even adequate.

Hey Redfox, welcome aboard.

As for flamebait, if people want to pursue the Mage wars we're fine with that here, provided you give us notice so we can get our marshmallows and hot cider ready in time for the show.

Quote from: RedFoxMage 2nd Edition Revised - Okay, it's not even a fucking edition change and the game setting and mechanics are drastically changed?  What the fuck? (Yeah, I know this is flamebait)
No, no.  Even if you liked the change, it still qualifies as a valid bait & switch.  1st ed was one game, 2nd ed essentially the same game re-described, but 2nd ed Revised was a different game set against a similar backdrop.

Quote from: GrimGentWell, if they did kill the poor critter, that would leave the slight problem of explaining why Sauron didn't conquer the world after Frodo refused to destroy the Ring at Mount Doom... which is of course fine if you are comfortable with rewriting the events in LotR but potentially troublesome otherwise.
I actually did that one...  I ran a brief MERP "What If?" scenario, looking at how the world might be if Sauron won.

This was about 15 years ago, so I don't remember many other details. :)

Thanks.

I just thought I'd caveat that it was an old saw.  But my point is what Ian Absentia picked up on:  Whether or not you like the changes, you were practically getting an entirely different game between 2e and the revision.  Bait'n'switch.

Quote from: RedFox7th Sea - So umm, swashbuckling with no pirates, eh?  And sorcery comes from aliens.  I knew that was lame even when I was playing D&D in junior high and ripping characters out of NES videogames to fuel my roleplaying plots.

Lost Colony - Originally it was going to be a whole gameline.  Then it was turned into a supplement for Hell On Earth.  It doesn't work as either.  Had the potential to be supernatural horror Firefly though.  I weep for that missed opportunity.

"Lost Colony" sounds like one of those stupid gift basket companies online that you order cheese and apples from at Christmas time.

Quote from: BalbinusOnce, when Pundit was a child, he fell into a river.  Nobody heard him calling, and he was swept downstream quickly and was soon in danger of his life.

He went under, fought his way back to the surface, and was going down again and realised that he was too tired and his clothes too heavy to let him reach the surface a second time.  He knew he was about to die.

At that very moment, a boxed set of Gamma World second edition floated downstream, dropped in by who knows whom.  Pundit grabbed onto it, and using it as a flotation device was able to reach the shore.

Since that day, he has regarded Gamma World as being quite literally the game that saved his life.

When d20 Gamma World came out, it was not a boxed set, it did not contain pockets of air that a drowning child might use to reach shore, and for that Pundit cannot forgive it.

So it is that, for Pundit, Bruce Baugh committed a terrible crime for had Bruce's version fallen in the river that day Pundit would surely have drowned.

Genius, Balbinus, genius!:D

Rich smoked monterey cheese from Lost Colony!

Well, what I meant was this:

J Arcane

Quote from: RPGPunditThe previous Gamma Worlds are crazy zany gonzo games of post-apocalyptic wackiness, where you play a bunch of wierd random-mutants (including bizzare stuff like mutant plants, mutant animals, guys with wierd powers, and usually with a few mutations that are actually counterproductive), living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland that is NEVER explained (though you can surmise it was WWIII/the bomb).  Your characters wander around, beat up wierder mutants, take their stuff (the "treasure" being mostly the garbage of our civilization) try to manage their resources to survive, join up with or fight wierd sects, and basically have a lightheartedly good time.

Gamma World D20, by virtue of the very name, proposed that it was that.
Instead, what we got was a completely unrelated RPG by Bruce Baugh that had to do with nanites and ecological preachiness, with "society construction", a very serious game that had absolutely no comedic elements to speak of, where you were supposed to deal with Deep Issues. And Baugh has publically stated that he did GW in this way because he felt that the old kind of GW was wrong and that he wanted to show all of us how you're supposed to do "serious roleplay". In other words, the fucker is a swine of the worst degree.

And god damn but this pisses ME off, because I never got to try GW back in the day.  I first got interested in the game sometime back when I discovered the computer game Alphaman, which was based off of Gamma World and Metamorphosis Alpha.

So when I came to find out that the new one wasn't the gonzo post-apoc D&D with mutants and rayguns and zombie Elvises that I had come to love in Alphaman, I was very displeased.

Maybe I'll track down the Alternity version someday.  Always liked Alternity.

You can still find the older editions on eBay.

I myself have a vintage first ed. box set I picked up at a gaming store in San Antonio last year for maybe $5.00. :D

Don't get the Alternity version, it was pretty bait-and-switch itself.

The best one, overall, is 4th Edition. Its a very complete game, and you'll be surprised just how similar it is to D20 considering it was done in the early-mid nineties. In fact, its more likely to be a REAL influence on D20 than some of the other "usual suspects" people like to throw around, considering Jonathan Tweet's known predilection for the GW game.

Speaking of which, if you really want a D20 version of Gamma World, get "Omega World"; the mini-setting that appeared in a Polyhedron/Dungeon magazine.  That's a great little game, easily the best of the mini-games (only Pulp Heroes comes close to matching it), though it doesn't really work for very very long-term campaign play. Its probably the best of the lot for short-term fun play though.

Perhaps I'll track down 4th Ed. then.  I'd been so hopeful abotu a D20 version, but if what you say is true, sounds like it'll be something I'll still quite like regardless.  Thanks for the advice.

umm, I think it was Goblin's Gate and Eagle's Eyrie (I hope I spelt that right), or one of the unrelated supplements.

Here's one:

TSR's Indiana Jones game.

I expected, you know, a traditional RPG. Y'know, where you can make your own characters.

Instead, you get to play a character from the movies. If you're the second one to the game, you get to play Sala. Third, short round. Have fun.
The Secret Volcano Base: my intermittently updated RPG blog.

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
