Title: Bad movies, good characters.
Post by: Dominus Nox on September 30, 2006, 04:50:57 AM
Ever see a truly bad movie that had a good character in it you liked? I mean a reeeeealy bad movie, one that stunk so bad it was like :fart:, but had a great character in it you just loved?

There was a terribly bad little movie called "Battle beyond the stars" that was basically star wars meets the magnificent 7 on a budget of like 2000$, and this was way before computer effects made cheap movies with decent effects possible.

It had one good, interesting character in it: A tired old space pirate named Gelt, played by Robert Vaugh who was about the best and deadliest space pirate in the universe, but was so wanted by the authorities he had literally nowhere safe he could go and relax. He offered to defend an out of the way nothing of a planet just to have one safe place where he could find a meal and a place to hide.

Great character played by a great actor. He stood out from the rest of the movie like the hope diamond on a pile of bullshit.

So, you have any bad movies that had great characters?

I tought that the android lover in Circuitry Man was kind of a neat character, but it's been like 300 years since I last saw it.

Okay, more like 13.

I thought "hardware" was a stupid movie, but I liked the nomad played by that guy from Fields of the Nephilim.

It's one of those movies that I remember in just bits and pieces.

Split Second and Slipstream both fall into this category, in my opinion.  Split Second has the Dick Durbin character is good and the Rutger Hauer character isn't all that bad, either.  The horror plot is largely a throw-away.  The whole "Bigger guns!  Not big enough!" scene is great.  The Mark Hamill character Will Tasker and Kitty Aldrige make another good team.  The story has moments but the setting is silly.

Isn't Fields of the Nephilim a goth band?

By the way, Hardware has an excellent soundtrack, too.

Pitch Black.  Great character, great visual expression.  Poop on a stick as a movie.

Split Second was and is a fine piece of trash film.  Rutger Hauer lends credibility to even the craziest, most poorly concieved roles out there.

"I wouldn't say it thinks it's Satan.  I would say that it is Satan."

"Then Satan is in deep shit!"

Yeah.

Oh, damn.  Rutger Hauer is the avatar of this thread!

Three words.  Blood. Of. Heroes.

Best post-apocalyptic sports movie EVER.  When I was a boy I wanted to grow up and marry Joan Chen (but not the real Joan Chen, knamean?)

I heard that the original (Austrailian?) cut of the film, called "Salute of the Jugger", runs longer and has a different ending.  Just FYI.

I'd like to see either, it's been too long.
