This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Malladin;438702No stigma to steampunk games,

If you say so, boss. Just seems like you are drawing a strange True Scotsman argument to distance yourself from something.

QuoteHowever, to me steampunk revolves around steamtech as super science, which it isn't in Etherscope, rather it's normal everyday technology.

Artificial distinction. I mean, if you have modern, silicon microchip computers but steam powered ray guns, that might be a meaningful distinction, but in Steampunk the general theme is that it (steam tech) IS the technology, super or not.

QuoteHow the 'punk' themes and the modern elements of social structure are handled in Etherscope in relation to Victorian social structures I also feel is different from the standard steampunk tropes.

Ok.  I mean, it seems like a pretty broad hat, what with Steampunk Palin and all that, but you're the guy selling it.

QuoteAnd as you say yourself, you don't have the game so not really a great judgment as it's based on one sentence that for me isn't even how I'd define steampunk

By all means, sum up your definition of Steampunk then and we'll have something that can actually be talked about.   My reasons for buying or not buying Etherscope has got nothing to do with whether or not it fits some rigid genre definition... I believe I'm on record for arguing that we shouldn't even ASSIGN things Genres, or something to that effect, so no skin off my nose.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Quote from: stu2000;438712It's steampunk to the degree that the folks photographed in the book are wearing steampunk outfits. UH was the first steampunky thing I'd seen where I realized the outfits had overtaken the genre. I had not realized it was a post-goth fashion/costuming subculture till then. Now, of course, that's the dominant expression of the genre.
I guess that makes the game sort of leading edge for what it's worth.
Truthfully... shamefully... those photographs were the biggest part of why I didn't pick up Unhallowed Metropolis when I spotted it at the LGS. They reminded me too much of what I didn't like about the World of Darkness stuff... too much of the posers down at the coffee house (who were always trying to LARP their Vampire games amidst us 'mortals').

But I like Etherscope, the setting at least... and assumed UM might be worth a second look as an adjunct to that.

Ghost Whistler

When I finally got around to seeing a copy of UM on sale I looked it over and thought....'meh'.

Very sad.

I always felt Etherscope would be vastly improved if it  ditched the d20 bollocks.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Like with WoD I'll just ignore the pretentious fetishist poser part and have actual fun with the game instead.

This thread came up in a google search. I didn't really check how old it was before posting.
