This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

asking for help with an alpha-level game

I know this is a lot to ask of people in a forum but I thought I would give it a shot here since all of you seem rather helpful (a cheap attempt at flattery I know but with truth in it according to my observations).  I will post it somewhere if there is enough interest.  Otherwise, I will go the email route.  Anyway, here is my first attempt at a blurb for the game.

The truth about the supernatural came to you in a single moment.  It passed...you realized that your transformation only brought more questions.

Curved Life is an RPG set in the modern era but the supernatural plays a role here.  The setting is modular in nature...you can take something out without fear of destroying the canon.  Enter a world where becoming a member of the supernatural doesn't make your life any easier, only more complicated.

Curved Life only needs two ten-sided die, pencils, paper and an imagination.  Gather your players and see if you can skirt the curve.

What is the nature of the supernatural? You said modular, is the "source" for supernatural that way as well?
Are you sure about the name? Curved Life doesn't say much about the supernatural to me. (Cursed Life, maybe.)

Will there be tools to build your own modules for play?

Are there common themes this game addresses? (as in, if this were a movie--what kind of movie IS it?) For example D&D "Kill things and take its stuff." is a common theme of play.

Why the perfix "Curved"? What does "Curved" signify in the game?
"Meh."

Let's see (last post before bed for the evening)

When I thought up the name Curved Life, I was thinking of the old saying about life throwing you curveballs.  Perhaps Cursed Life or something name will fit better...

In the alpha document, I have a default source of demons entering the body through a "sire" and transforming the character into a creature of the night.  As a PC, there are ways to be tempted...classic power now for damnation later stuff.  However, I included an possible group called Hexicon Corp...a genetics lab doing research on the transformed.   Therefore, there is an out with transformation being the result of a disease.  In fact, the chagren could read both ways.  I'm sure I can come with more possibilities although ones I am thinking about go back to genetics or possession...science or faith if you will.

I was thinking about novels like 30 days of night, some anne rice and a couple of others I read.  In all of those novels, there's never a sense of being bitten and changed in a moment.  They do not instantly get super powers and the answer to all of life's questions.  Uncertainity and doubt are some of the themes I am thinking about.  However, I also tried to think about combat as well.  I thought about the Blade trilogy and stuff like that.

I also tried to say that the players are far more on their own.  There is no formal support structure to help newbies and to cover up mistakes.

Anyway, I hope this answers some of your questions.

What do you mean by a blurb? A general statement about what the game is about, to pitch to players or publishers? Or a back cover blurb, zippy language to pitch the game to buyers or hype it at a con? The language is very different in those two applications.
Employment Counselor: So what do you like to do outside of work?
Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

Okay, so I've read the blurb and my first reaction was "So, it's exactly the same thing as World of Darkness, only with different mechanics."

That's not a good first reaction to evoke when you're trying to get people interested. So, the first thing you should do when thinking up the blurb is ask yourself the question of how the game is different from WoD.

Premier:

I was trying to avoid having that comparsion made but it's a good thing to put that out there.  I have some more ideas to making different angles for settings.  I put into the game and then where my writing takes me.  I'll redo my pitch at some point and see if it invokes the same reaction from you.

stu2000:

At this point, I was wanting to write a short general statement about the game.  Something I could tell someone and see if they would like to playtest it without using a lot of words.  If I can make pithy statements to do it, fine.  If I need something longer, that could work too.

Generally speaking:

At this point, I have included variations:

1. spiritual warfare (demon inhabits body and you have to battle for your soul at all times).  Most of my writing has been on this angle.

2. genetics (the "transformation" is a disease which alters the genetic structure of humans in different, something like resident evil's T-virus except you maintain intelligence and not all victims can spread it.  In addition, most humans do not change their form.)  I will have to write a smidge more and alter a few small details but easily included.

3. aliens (you were never truly human, each entry in the book is a different aliens species that just happens to conform to some of Earth's legends).  I have to write more on this.

4. magic (either someone has worked an awesome ritual spell to alter dimensional laws or the right time, alignment of planets, etc has naturally changed certain people.)  Again, I have to work on this some more.

5. Combination of factors:  It's different factors at work with each other.  The GM can decide on this.  (This option is include for completeness).

6.  I still have a lifepath system but I'll have to adapt it so it is more inclusive.

With all of that written above, perhaps if some of you had additional options...please and thank you.

Ok, I added some more pages here and I want to re-work my pitch.  I tried to present as if it was on the back page because I wanted to try to come up with a short but effective presentation.  In other words, I thought it would be a good exercise in summarizing the game.  As always, comments are appreciated and asking to help with the actual project is even better:)

In a single moment, the truth came to you in three little words, "you were wrong."  Now, you are a member of the transformed.

Cursed Life is set in the modern era and the players are characters who have entered into the world of the supernatural.  However, they don't know this came to be.  Did aliens implant symbionts into you while you slept?  Did your soul become the center of a battle between angels and demons?  Has a new age descended upon mankind?

You can answer yes to any of these questions and more because of the modular nature of Cursed Life.  Use what you do like and take out what you don't.   The time is now; the place has changed.  Take your life back now!
